At CDE 2026, Norton made its debut as Simon Skinner presented a deep-dive of the Manx R and Atlas, offering a taster of Norton’s approach to design, the foundation for everything that follows.

Racer. Engineer. Trailblazer.

Born on this day in 1909, Beatrice Shilling became one of only three women to earn a Gold Star at the Brooklands circuit in 1936, completing a lap at an average of 106mph aboard a Norton M30 500cc — the fastest Gold Star lap achieved by a woman at the time.

Her impact didn’t stop there. At the Royal Aircraft Establishment, she designed the R.A.E. restrictor, which prevented carburettor flooding in the Merlin engines of the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane, allowing pilots to perform steep dives safely during WWII.

Awarded an OBE for her work, she remains one of motorcycling’s great pioneers.
