The R129 Explained: M119 engines.

3/3 | 1996–1998: Motronic

The final evolution arrived for 1996 with Bosch Motronic engine management, combining ignition and fuel control into one system and doing away with the earlier distributor-cap setup.

Part 3 covers what changed, how these later M119 cars differ to KE and LH versions, and the pros and cons of the final R129 M119 setup.

For 1993, the M119-powered R129 moved to Bosch LH-Jetronic, bringing fully electronic fuel injection into the equation.

A top tier Japanese import 500 SL, in exceptional condition and showing just 16,000 miles.

We know we’ve covered these early KE-Jetronic cars quite a lot, but this one was simply too good not to feature.

It came to us for various works, including a complete reseal of the hydraulic roof system.

A genuinely outstanding R129, a real delight to drive.

Some lighter content here, we cater for all needs. This 1998 SL 500 has come through for various jobs. Customer wanted to lower the ride height a touch, and improve the handling. So we fitted a Bilstein Pro 12 complete kit. This kit is our off the shelf choice for lowering springs/shocks, you get the pros with very little compromise on ride quality. Will be some weeks and miles yet until it properly settles and beds in, here’s an insight for now.

Recent ASR fix on an early R129 500 SL.

We see a lot of ASR faults on these cars, there’s no single magic fix. This one turned out to be a faulty pre-charge pump but it’s just one of many potential causes of a dreaded ASR warning light.
