We always enjoy meeting customers from overseas and it was a pleasure to meet Ralf & Ulrika from Germany with their U1300L Fire truck camper conversion.

Of course we have to stick our heads under the bonnet of any Unimog which comes into the yard.

Ralf has optimised the vehicle for long distance travel with turbo kit, electric fan and the Atkinson Vos fast hub gears proven over 20000kms travelling across Europe.

The Unimog cruises happily at 55-60mph even on 335/80R20 tyres and returns over 20mpg (11.76L/100km)!

As an ex-Fire Fighter Ralf always makes time to call in on Fire Stations where his Unimog is always admired.

Last year Josh brought us his 3.85m wheelbase U4000, which he had bought at auction with plans to turn it into an expedition vehicle.

The build included fitting a 4.8m chamfered composite habitation box mounted on one of our galvanised AV subframes. Alongside this, the Unimog received bodywork repairs, a full blast and repaint, and a mechanical overhaul in our workshop.

We also fitted Hutchinson beadlock wheels with new Continental multipurpose tyres, and designed and installed a rear carrier for a pair of spare wheels.

We’re looking forward to seeing the interior Josh will be fitting next, and we’ll be supplying a few more AV accessories to help finish the build.

Latest Adventure for this U1300L

We supplied this Unimog back in 2023 to Ben Young of Ketchum, Idaho, USA. Before heading across the Atlantic it lived several lives here, latterly acting as our test vehicle!

Ben specified a comprehensive selection of AV upgrades, including super-fast 24:11 axle gearing to provide more relaxed cruising. This was paired with our turbo and intercooler upgrade, delivering the extra power and torque needed to make the most of the taller gearing.

We're pleased to report the Unimog is performing brilliantly and is now out exploring the backcountry trails of Idaho.

Great to see another AV-prepared Unimog being used exactly as it should be!

We first sold this U400 back in 2023. It has been well maintained by us ever since, so when the owner decided to sell, we were keen to help — especially as these 6-cylinder U400s are always popular.

Another week in our bustling Unimog workshop with a great variety of vehicles in and out.

1. Checking over this U4000 DOKA expedition truck after a trouble free 16000km trip through North Africa – some running repairs to be done but it’ll soon be ready for another adventure!

2. Reconditioned engine going into the Road Rail U400 – soon back into service.

3. Freshly vapour blasted brake calipers – this process really does give a fantastic finish on parts like this.

4. French U1500 undergoing rear axle repairs – the owner will be driving it 1200kms back to Alsace.

5. U400 recently sold, U4000 and another U400 in the background.

6. Back from blasting work continues on the pair of CTIS axles for a customer in Texas, USA.

7. Freshening up the U2150. The owner has never put cosmetics at the top of his list but the time is right for a repaint so we’re sorting a few small areas of welding and fitting an updated bonnet and grille before it heads to the paint shop.

8. We modified this winch plate for a customer to make it suitable for mounting on a 3 point linkage.

9. We’re nibbling away at the U1000 restoration project. Glass is back in the cab, dashboard and interior trim next.
