π THE END OF THE GEAR STICK IS COMING β HERE'S WHAT UK DRIVERS NEED TO KNOW
A major new study by automotive data firm Vehicle Data Global has made a bold prediction: by 2030, you may not be able to buy a brand new manual car in the UK at all.
Here's why β and what it means for you π
π The numbers tell the story Back in 2019, over half of petrol and diesel car buyers chose a manual gearbox. Today, that figure has dropped to just 34% β and falling fast. Manuals now make up less than 14% of all new cars sold in the UK.
β‘ Electric and hybrid cars are changing everything EVs and hybrids don't have traditional gearboxes β they're automatic by design. As these vehicles take over the market, manufacturers are quietly phasing manual options out.
π° Car makers are doing the maths It costs manufacturers a huge amount to develop, certify and produce manual gearboxes. With fewer and fewer buyers choosing them, many are asking: is it still worth it? The answer, increasingly, is no. The number of new car models available with a manual has already fallen from 197 in 2016 to just 67 today.
π§ What does this mean for you?
β
If you're buying a new car soon, an automatic may already be your only option on many models
β
If you only have a manual licence, it's worth thinking ahead β automatic licences let you drive both
β
Automatic gearboxes need their own specific servicing β transmission fluid checks, gearbox health checks and more β so make sure your garage knows what they're doing!
That last point is where we come in π Whether you drive a manual, automatic, hybrid or EV, we can keep your car running smoothly.
