🔋⚡ Flat battery AGAIN? It might not be the battery...

More drivers than ever are being caught out by alternator problems. The alternator is the part that keeps your battery charged and powers everything electrical while you drive, and today's cars are asking a lot more of it.

With the clocks going back next month, it's about to work even harder. 🌧️🌙

🤔 Why are alternators struggling more these days?

🔌 More gadgets, more demand. Heated seats, big touchscreens, sensors, cameras and phone chargers all draw power, all the time.�

🛑 Stop-start systems. Constant restarting means more charging cycles and more strain.�

🏘️ Short journeys. Quick trips never give the battery a chance to fully recharge, so the alternator is always playing catch-up.�

🔋 The wrong battery. Stop-start cars need a specific battery type (AGM or EFB), and many need it registered to the car. Get it wrong and the alternator pays the price.�

🚗 We're keeping cars longer. Older cars mean more worn belts, pulleys and bearings.

🚗 Is your SEAT about to become obsolete? Here's what's actually happening.

Headlines this week claim Volkswagen Group is considering phasing out the SEAT brand by 2029, shifting focus to sister brand Cupra — which has been outselling SEAT for the first time in its history.

Cue the panicked messages from SEAT owners wondering if their car is now "worthless." It isn't. Here's why:

🔧 Parts and servicing don't disappear overnight. Even in a full brand wind-down, manufacturers are contractually and practically obligated to support existing vehicles for years — often a decade or more.

📉 This isn't new. SEAT hasn't launched a genuinely new-generation model since the early 2020s, while Cupra's line-up has doubled. The writing's been on the wall for a while — it just made headlines now.

🏆 Independent garages like ours don't care whose logo is on the bonnet. We service SEATs (and every other make) using the same diagnostic kit, the same genuine and OEM-equivalent parts suppliers, and the same expertise — brand politics in Wolfsburg boardrooms doesn't change what's under your bonnet.

🚗 Thinking of buying a Chinese car? Read this first.

BYD, MG, Omoda, Jaecoo, Chery. They've gone from unknown to roughly 15% of all new cars sold in the UK this year. Big kit, big warranties, keen prices.

Here's the thing though: the cars are mostly fine. It's what happens after you buy that catches people out. 👇

⚠️ Insurance can cost you the savings
Several of the UK's biggest insurers are still refusing to quote on some popular Chinese models. Where they do quote, it's often hundreds more than a comparable Korean or European car. Get a quote BEFORE you commit, not after.

🔧 Parts can take weeks, not days
Established brands have decades of parts logistics behind them. Newer arrivals don't. Owners have reported 8 to 16 week waits for crash repair parts. That's a long time off the road.

📋 Some cars get written off over small damage
Insurers need approved repair methods to authorise a repair. For a lot of Chinese models that documentation doesn't exist here yet, because it was never needed in China. Result: cars written off for damage a Ford would shrug off.

📉 Depreciation is steeper
Around 35-50% over three years, versus 25-35% for an equivalent European EV. Worth knowing if you're on P*P.

💻 It's the software, not the engine
Owner surveys show the common gripes aren't batteries or motors. They're infotainment glitches, connectivity drop-outs and over-sensitive driver aids. Annoying rather than catastrophic, but worth a proper test drive.

✅ The good news: you're not tied down
A long warranty doesn't mean you have to go back to the main agent for servicing. As long as the work follows the manufacturer's schedule and uses correct-spec parts, your warranty stays intact when we service it. We have the legal right to the technical data, we keep our diagnostics current, and we'll usually be quicker and cheaper.

⚡ Electric Car Charging: Know the Etiquette (Before You Get Fined)

More EVs on the road means more pressure on charging bays — and a bit of bad etiquette can leave someone stranded with a flat battery. Here's what everyone needs to know, whether you drive electric or not:

🚗 If you DON'T drive an EV:

Don't park in a charging bay "just for a minute." This is called "ICEing" — a petrol or diesel car blocking a bay reserved for EV charging — and it's one of the most common complaints from EV owners.

It's not just bad manners either — councils can issue fines of £70-£130 depending on the area, and private parking operators may issue their own charges of £50-£100. Some councils are even introducing powers to tow repeat offenders.

🔌 If you DO drive an EV:

• Only park in a charging bay while actively charging — any driver can be guilty of blocking a bay once their car is fully charged, so vacate as soon as charging finishes. RAC

• Don't dawdle — once you've reached the charge you need, aim to move within 5-10 minutes, as many networks now apply idle fees once charging ends.

• Consider stopping at 80-85% rather than 100% — it's faster and helps reduce queues at busy chargers.

Never try to unplug someone else's car — most EVs and charge points lock the cable during charging, and tampering with it could be treated as criminal damage.

• Coil your cable and pop it back on the holder when you're done — a stray cable across the bay is a trip hazard for the next person.

📸 If you spot a blocked or misused bay, most charging apps let you report it — worth doing so the next driver isn't caught out.

⚙️ TIMING CHAIN
✅ Lasts the life of the engine (usually)
✅ No scheduled replacement needed
❌ If it does fail, it's an expensive strip-down job
❌ Rattle on start-up can signal wear

🔗 CAMBELT
✅ Cheap and predictable if replaced on schedule
✅ Easy to check service history for
❌ Needs replacing every 60k–100k miles or 5–10 years
❌ Snap it on most modern engines = pistons meet valves = game over

🛢️ WET BELT (the one to watch!)
✅ Quieter running, slight efficiency gain
❌ Runs in oil - as it wears, it sheds rubber debris
❌ Can clog oil pickups and starve the engine, sometimes before 100k miles

✔️ Ask for service history and proof of belt/chain work

🚗 SEEING DOUBLE? How to Avoid Buying a "Cloned" Car 🚗

Car cloning is basically identity theft on four wheels. Thieves steal a car, then give it a fresh identity copied from an identical make, model and colour that's legally on the road — same 17-digit VIN, a stolen log book, the lot. Buy one by mistake and you could lose the car AND your money. 😬

Here's how to protect yourself before you hand over a penny 👇

🔍 Check the paperwork properly�View the car at the registered keeper's address on the V5C — never a petrol station or layby. Run the free gov.uk MOT checker and make sure the mileage tallies with the dashboard.

🔢 Match the numbers�Check every VIN on the car matches — and matches the DVLA's records. A proper history check (e.g. Cap HPI) will confirm it.

💷 If it's too cheap, be suspicious�Anything under ~70% of the going market rate should set alarm bells ringing. Genuine bargains are rare — dodgy clones aren't.

💳 Don't pay in cash�Especially on anything over £3,000. Most clone sellers would rather walk away than take a traceable payment. If it feels off, walk away — there's always another car.

⚠️ "Lost log book"? Red flag.�Missing or "mislaid" V5C is a classic warning sign. Check it very, very carefully.

We've all been there. You've just had your car looking spotless, you nip into the shop for five minutes, and BAM — a passing pigeon has left you a little "gift." Rude.

Here's how to fight back. 👇

🅿️ First, Dodge the Bombing Runs

➡️ Avoid parking under trees, telephone wires and lamp posts — these are basically bird departure lounges. ✈️

➡️ Steer clear of ledges, rooftops and anywhere you spot a flock gathering.

➡️ If you've no choice, a car cover is your best friend.

🧽 The Golden Rule: Get It Off FAST�Bird droppings are surprisingly nasty — they're acidic and can etch permanently into your paintwork and lacquer, especially on a hot day when the sun bakes them on. The longer it sits, the worse the damage. ☀️

🚿 How to Remove Dried-On Droppings (Safely)

1 Never scrub a dry deposit — you'll grind it into the paint and cause scratches. ⛔

2 Soak it first. Lay a warm, damp microfibre cloth over the mess and leave it for 5–10 minutes to soften.

3 Gently wipe away in one direction — don't rub back and forth.

4 For stubborn spots, use a dedicated bird dropping remover or a little warm soapy water. Rinse well.

5 Dry the area and, if you can, add a quick spray of wax or detailer to protect the paint. ✨

🚗💧 Washing your car? Careful — that hosepipe could cost you £1,000! 💧🚗

With hosepipe bans now in force across much of the country, that innocent weekend car wash on the driveway could land you a fine of up to £1,000 if you're using a mains-fed hosepipe. 😬

But here's the good news… ✅

It's the hosepipe that's banned — not washing your car! You've still got plenty of perfectly legal ways to keep your motor gleaming:

🪣 Bucket & sponge – the classic, and it uses far less water than a hose anyway�🚿

Watering can – great for a controlled rinse�🌧️ Rainwater from a water butt – free, and totally allowed�

🧽 Commercial car wash – let the pros handle it (many recycle their water!)

⚠️ Why it matters: A dirty car isn't just about looks. Caked-on grime over your number plate, lights or windscreen can actually be an MOT failure — and a safety risk. So keeping it clean the legal way is well worth it.

💡 Top tip: A quick bucket wash every couple of weeks stops dirt building up, so you use less water AND less elbow grease. Win-win! 🙌

🚨 Did you know unroadworthy vehicles landed over 10,000 drivers in trouble last year? 🚨

That's not a typo. New figures show more than 10,000 drivers received penalty points in 2025 for driving vehicles that weren't fit for the road — defective tyres, brakes, steering, and other faults.

Here's the breakdown 👇

🔧 Defective tyres were the biggest culprit — over 6,600 drivers caught out. And it's not just points: you could face a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre.

🔧 Another 3,300+ endorsements were handed out for other roadworthiness issues like faulty brakes or steering.

⚠️ The penalty? 3 points on your licence, staying there for 4 years.

And here's the scary part — those are just the ones who got caught. With nearly 10 million MOTs failed every year, the real number of unroadworthy cars out there is likely much higher. Fewer traffic police on the roads means more people are driving around unaware their car isn't safe.
