We watched the BBC Panorama documentary on Ghost Plates this week with great interest. Ghost plates are becoming a big problem in the UK; the authorities think as many as 1 in 15 cars may have them. Ghost plates look like any other plate to the naked eye but when caught on a police camera, some digits have been greyed out using special lettering to avoid detection. Needless to say, they are highly illegal.

We frequently get asked why we need to see documentation to sell plates, and this documentary did a good job of explaining why. First of all, it’s a legal requirement as a DVLA-approved supplier, but more importantly… legal plates make our roads safer, as this programme illustrates so clearly.

You can see the doc by searching for ‘Ghost Plates: Drivers Cheating the Law’ on iPlayer and find out more here:

Have you watched it yet? We would love to know your thoughts.

Illegal registration plates are far too easy to get hold of and are putting the public at risk, BBC is told.

We're going deep into the archives today with this find! Did anyone visit Bob Wylie on Cromac Street?

Wylie Number Plates was founded by Bob Wylie, a motor trade veteran and RAC scrutineer who understood better than most what a well-made plate should look like. His son Mike took over the business and his architectural eye for proportion helped define the stylised plates of the '70s and '80s. Now we're into our third generation of Wylies.

Over eight decades, we've moved from early enamel designs through to today's premium acrylic, 3D gel and laser-cut 4D finishes. The technology has changed but the same Wylie values and craftsmanship are all there.

PS: Don't worry, we're fully digital these days. No more paper dockets!

Could your number plates fail your MOT for you? As we enter MOT season, here are the factors the testing station will be looking out for on your number plate.

1) Cracks, chips or peeling surfaces that affect the readability of the characters.

2) A plate that moves, wobbles or is poorly fixed could be an advisory - or a fail if the tester judges it insecure enough to detach while driving.

3) Faded characters, discolouration or dirty plates that obscure the registration are all grounds for failure.

4) Non-standard fonts, incorrect spacing or missing British Standard markings can also result in a fail - even if the plate looks fine at a glance.

The good news: a new set of plates is one of the cheapest and quickest fixes you can make before an MOT. We make and despatch our plates quickly, shipping all over the UK.
