Thinking about learning to drive?
Learning to drive isn't just about passing your driving test, the driving test should be the minimum standard. Driving is alot more involved than just a test. The DVSA states that 20% of new drivers are involved in a car accident within the first 12 months after passing their test and on average a student requires 45 hours of professional lessons and 22 hours of private practice to reach test standard.
Here are the 27 core driving skills all learners require not just to pass their test but to be a safe driver for years to come.
When you're competent in all these you are ready, good luck !!!

The 27 driving skills defined by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) are categorized into eight core groups. They form the complete standard framework required to learn how to drive safely and independently.
1. Basics (Skills 1 to 4)
Skill 1: Legal responsibilities – Understanding how driving laws, vehicle documents (tax, MOT, insurance), and personal fitness (health, eyesight, substances) relate to you.
Skill 2: Safety checks – Knowing how and when to check vital vehicle components (fuel, lights, oil, water, tyres).
Skill 3: Cockpit checks – Adjusting seats, head restraints, steering, and mirrors for comfort and control, plus securing seatbelts.
Skill 4: Security – Protecting your vehicle, contents, and personal safety.
2. Control and Positioning (Skills 5 to 7)
Skill 5: Controls and instruments – Mastering foot controls, hand controls, dashboard warnings, and auxiliary switches.
Skill 6: Moving away and stopping – Moving off and bringing the vehicle to a safe, controlled halt on various gradients.
Skill 7: Safe positioning – Maintaining the correct lateral and forward position on different road types.
3. Observations, Signalling, and Planning (Skills 8 to 13)
Skill 8: Mirrors (vision and use) – Regularly checking and acting upon information seen in mirrors.
Skill 9: Signals – Giving clear, well-timed signals and responding correctly to others.
Skill 10: Anticipation and planning – Reading the road ahead and predicting potential hazards.
Skill 11: Use of speed – Adhering to speed limits and adjusting speed to fit prevailing road conditions.
Skill 12: Other traffic – Safely meeting, crossing, and overtaking other vehicles and road users.
Skill 13: Fuel-efficient driving – Driving smoothly to minimize fuel consumption and emissions.
4. Junctions, Roundabouts, and Crossings (Skills 14 to 16)
Skill 14: Junctions – Safely approaching, emerging from, and turning into various types of junctions.
Skill 15: Roundabouts – Navigating mini, standard, and multi-lane roundabouts correctly.
Skill 16: Pedestrian crossings – Recognizing and respecting different types of pedestrian and cyclist crossings.
