Good luck to all competitors in this year’s Club Triumph, Round Britain Reliability Run. A 2,000 mile, 48-hour dash around the Country all for Charity. This year’s chosen charity is Parkinsons UK

David Shepherd has competed in the RBRR twice before, once in his daughter's Dolomite 1300 and again in his son's Triumph 2500 saloon. He had a hankering to do the event in a Standard 8 or 10.

Finding this Sliding Window Standard 8 fitted with a 948cc engine, and the useful addition of twin SU carburettors, David decided it fitted the bill nicely!

A recent reliable 400 mile proving trip to Gaydon to attend the RBRR briefing went without a hitch.

We will be following his progress with interest.

Farewell to Rally Legend - Stuart Turner - 9th September 2025

As Comps Supremo at BMC and Ford, Stuart Turner masterminded the Mini’s era-defining victories, guided the Es**rt to legendary status, and played a hand in projects like the ferocious RS200.

Before those triumphs, he cut his teeth with the Standard-Triumph Works Rally Team — tackling the RAC, Tulip, and Monte Carlo Rallies with trademark grit and intelligence. His influence shaped rallying’s golden age.

When asked to define rallying in five words, he replied perfectly: “Es**rt sideways in the Forest.”

This old slide of a Standard with a “flame job” was a trip down memory lane for me.

When I was growing up as a car crazy kid in the ‘70’s, no car was safe from a flame job. Es**rts, Cortinas, Anglias etc but also cars like this little Standard.

The craze seems to have died down except for traditional Hot Rods.

A flame job on a Tesla? Can’t see it happening…

I really enjoyed this very positive review of a daily driven Standard 10.

They’re very practical cars. It’s good to hear that Steph, who is on the shorter side, felt as comfortable as I do in my 10 (I’m well over 6 foot)

My daily driver “Snowflake” is less claustrophobic than a modern car and a comfortable ride with her modern Mazda MX5 seats.

I was very sad to learn of the recent passing of Paddy Hopkirk MBE (21st July 2022). My thoughts are with his family.

While he will be rightly remembered for his many successes in the all-conquering Mini; not many people know that his first Works Drive was in a Standard 10 on the 1956 RAC Rally. A strong start was undone by a holed sump relegating him to “finisher”, however two months later in the 1956 Tulip Rally he finished third overall driving an unmodified Standard 8. This enabled Standard to carry off the Manufacturers Team prize!

As a Standard Triumph Works driver, he achieved some solid results in the Tulip, Alpine and Midnight Sun Rallies in various Triumph TR3/3As as well as an overall win on the Circuit of Ireland Rally.

It’s probably best to gloss over the dismal and ill-advised entry of three unmodified Standard 8s (badged “Vanguard Junior”) in the 1957 Midnight Sun Rally. Another epic drive in a Standard Pennant on the 1958 RAC Rally helped Standard to win the Manufacturers Team prize once again.

Paddy’s career as a Standard Triumph Works driver ended abruptly in 1958 when he was dismissed for trashing a TR3a in that year’s Alpine Rally.

He remained loyal to the marque; at one point his business ran several Standard Vans.

Standard enthusiasts were treated to two Vanguard models competing in the Sopwith Cup race at the 79th Goodwood Members Meeting

Whilst the spotlight has been on James Colburn's magnificent win, in his Standard Vanguard 6, the other Vanguard has received little attention.

Out of 26 cars that started the race a 1952 Standard Vanguard Phase 1a driven by Andrew Sharp qualified 17th and finished a very credible 14th one of only 14 cars that weren't lapped by the all conquering Vanguard 6.

This car, originally built by Ian Kellett, was displayed on the Standard Motor Club's 2011 NEC stand aboard a stretched Vanguard Transporter both winning an award.

Incidentally, the Vanguard Transporter is currently available for sale in Germany.
