Really interesting job on tight now, Mazda CX5 with the 2.2 Skyactive Diesel engine. The engine gas lost its oil pressure and the most common issue with this engine with this particular problem is either 1 or more of the injector washers failing causing carbon buildup within the engine eventually causing a blockage within the oil pump strainer.
So initially I stripped out the fuel injectors and No-1 injector was very difficult to remove and once the camshaft cover could be removed I was presented with an absolute horror show. There was a massive amount of carbon buildup all over the camshaft oil spray bar and all around the camshaft, so after several hours of hard graft I managed to clean a very big portion of the carbon away and the next job is to drain the engine oil remove the sump and the oil pump, replace the strainer reassemble then I'm going to use a flushing fluid to attempt a more thorough clean of the engines internals then change the oil and filter. The final issue is that the engine would not rev but would cut out if attempting to rev the engine, im hoping this is a protection method of the engine ECU when a low oil pressure fault presents itself,
This job is in process at this moment so an update may appear once the work has been completed.
I've added photos to show the before and after unfortunately this was the best i could do without removing the cylinder head.
Wow unfortunately this job didn’t go the way it should have. All the way through this repair i had authorisation to carry out the work as the customer could see all the mess that as things progressed he agreed that he caused and I’ll explain towards the end, so thus repair took a very long time due to the congealed sludgy oil mess that i tried my best to clean up, so with a rough estimate given to the customer authorisation given by him to continue to reassemble the top end and then to strip out the sump to get to what i initially believed was a symptom caused by the injector seal failure and the oil sludge, now bearing in mind on my initial inspection i carried out a diagnostic test which confirmed very low oil pressure and i started the engine but absolutely no throttle response but as soon as you put your foot down on the throttle pedal the engine dies as confirmed had happened to this customer several times, he reported this exact symptom to me. So we agreed to get the vehicle to my home workshop for repair.
So now I’ve removed the lower engine cover and attempted to rotate the engine and unfortunately it was now seized, absolutely nothing to do with any work I’ve carried out, sump removal took about 2 hours to remove and on removal found a broke oil pump drive chain, now im so confused as no noise or rattling was detected when i had the engine running, so now the disaster, the customer wanted me to put the sump back and give him my bill but after he had given authorisation all the way through as i never carry out unauthorised work, so he agreed to pay my bill after reassembly but now nothing, he offered a measly sum around half of the authorised figure so i now have the car immobilised as he tried to take it away by force without paying a penny and now court action is pending.
The joys of being a self employed motor mechanic with a very good reputation but people like this guy leave a sour taste. I found out from him that in about 7 years of ownership and around 60-80,000 miles this engine had only had 2 engine oil changes, as I mentioned earlier he caused this issue wholly by his negligence by not servicing the car but now he is blaming me as the engine requires a lot of money spending on it of which i believe he cannot afford to pay for and I strongly believe he did not have the available funds for when i took on the work. This job is awaiting court action and i will try to update.
