A few recent jobs from Callum Horsfield Auto Electrics šŸ”§āš”

Quite a mix lately, from lighting faults and immobiliser problems to instrument repairs and custom wiring.

šŸ”¹ Honda Civic EP3
A faulty Hamilton & Palmer alarm system was causing trouble. Traced its immobilisation wiring, removed the faulty system from the equation and restored operation using the Honda’s original transponder immobiliser.

šŸ”¹ Renault Trafic
In after an MOT failure for some unusual lighting faults. A replacement stalk module hadn’t solved it, so we tested the circuit and found a missing power supply. Traced this to a wiring short and heat damage at the fusebox. A new, correctly fused ignition feed restored normal headlight operation, sorting the lighting issue ready for its MOT retest.

šŸ”¹ Ford Transit
Non-working trailer brake lights, water ingress in the rear lamp holders and the dreaded Scotchlok connectors!
Cleaned up the loom-side connections, replaced the affected bulb holders and reworked the trailer lighting connections with proper sealed splices. Everything working as it should again.

šŸ”¹ BMW engine ECU
An update on the DME featured previously: opening it revealed a loose capacitor with cracked solder joints and evidence of previous repair work. A replacement capacitor is on order, with repair and testing to follow before it goes back to the customer.

šŸ”¹ Jaguar instrument cluster
An intermittent rev-counter needle was traced to damaged plastic gears inside its motor. Replaced the faulty motor and the needle is back working properly.

šŸ”¹ Custom lighting loom
Built to run multiple front light bars, with a ground-switched relay control so it can be triggered by a separate switch or a suitable existing lighting circuit, such as main beam. Finished with genuine Deutsch DT sealed connectors, professional loom wrapping and a fused battery supply.

And a handy new addition from RMS Diagnostics: a 3D-printed bulb holder for circuit load testing. A welcome upgrade from my homemade setup—and hopefully fewer burnt fingers! šŸ’”šŸ˜‚

Intermittent faults have been the theme lately! šŸ”§šŸ˜…

⚔ A Mercedes with an occasional non-start and more than one electrical issue. A corroded connector was responsible for lost communication with the parking sensors and collision prevention module. Further checks uncovered water ingress and heavily corroded fusebox/stop-start battery connections, suspected of contributing to the starting fault. Connector replaced with a DT plug and fusebox and battery cleaned up of corrosion.

⚔ A Jaguar instrument cluster with an RPM needle that had developed a personality of its own. Replacement needle motor on order to be soldered on.

⚔ A Peugeot 208 GT with a starter motor that only failed when it felt like it. Key recognition issues following a battery replacement were sorted first, before the original fault reappeared and the starter was diagnosed.

⚔ A Vauxhall Vivaro failing to recognise its key, traced to the steering column module not passing the antenna information through to the BSI. Replacement on order.

⚔ A Golf GTD still refusing to charge after an alternator replacement. Wiring signal checks carried out with the oscilloscope, followed by an adaptation—now communicating and charging properly.

āš”ļø CitroĆ«n Belingo with a suspected failed blower motor/resistor pack, turned out to be an easy one, after gaining access to the connectors above the foot pedal we found the blower motor was disconnected, connected back up and back heating.

āš”ļø Mercedes A180 with intermittent cluster problems, traced not to the cluster itself but a connector behind the cluster which acts as a gateway for the various data CAN networks.

The tricky part with intermittent faults is catching them in the act. That’s where patient testing earns its keep!

Not all electrical faults need a new part—and even the common ones need properly diagnosing šŸ”§

A few recent jobs:

🚐 A Fiat Ducato motorhome with a failed airbag module. These are a known trouble spot, but poor earth connections can cause issues too. Power supplies and earths were load tested before confirming the diagnosis, and the customer has chosen to send the module away for repair.

šŸ”‘ A remote central locking retrofit on a Ford Es**rt. A useful upgrade without losing the character of an older car!

šŸš— A BMW that’s been keeping things interesting. Its engine ECU was switching its own supply relays on and off, with the fault getting worse as the car got hotter. After tracing the wiring and checking the supplies and earths, a temporary diagnostic bypass kept those feeds stable.

With the car being an import, replacement ECUs scarce and signs of an earlier repair, this one’s still a work in progress. Stay tuned!

Chasing wiring faults is what I specialise in. If you’ve got an electrical problem that needs getting to the bottom of, drop me a message.

Still here, still chasing wires! šŸ”§āš”

I haven’t posted much recently — work’s been keeping me busy, along with a few bits behind the scenes šŸ–„ļø

Recent jobs have included an infotainment system diagnosed as a failed unit after testing its supplies, earths and network; electric window trouble traced to a failed motor after wiring and switch checks; and a handbrake module with no power, caused by a poor previous repair in the chassis loom.

All good examples of why testing matters before fitting parts. Sometimes it’s the component, sometimes it’s the wiring feeding it.

Tracking down wiring faults is what I specialise in, so if something electrical is playing up on your vehicle, drop me a message!

šŸ”§ Two jobs sorted on this Ford Transit Custom!

First up, failed wiring in the door loom. Ford’s choice of all-black wires certainly doesn’t make repairs any easier šŸ˜‚ A replacement loom was the sensible route here, carefully routed and fitted into the door.

šŸ’» While I was there, the customer asked about removing the fixed speed limiter now it’s a camper. Laptop and pass-through connected, ECU configuration updated and limiter removed.

It’s been a busy run of wiring faults and electrical diagnostics recently!

šŸ”§ First was a Volkswagen Beetle with several broken wires inside the driver’s door loom. Rather than replacing the entire harness, I made up a new section through the door gaiter and spliced it into the original loom—a sensible, cost-effective way of keeping an older vehicle on the road.

šŸ’” Next was a BMW with a failed headlight. A wheel-arch access hatch had been left off during previous work, allowing water and road spray to cause extensive damage to the headlight and its wiring. I sourced a used replacement headlight and pigtail connector, repaired the vehicle-side loom and installed the new unit.

šŸ”‹ I also diagnosed a parasitic battery drain caused by an aftermarket head unit. This gave me the chance to use the Power Probe fuse tester, which can identify current draw through the fuses without disturbing the vehicle or waking up its control modules. A very useful addition to the diagnostic kit!

šŸ› ļø Finally, a Ford Galaxy came in with an electronic parking brake fault. A new caliper and switch had already been fitted, but the fault remained. Proper testing revealed an open circuit in the wheel-arch loom, likely caused by the wiring being routed incorrectly and placed under strain. The damaged wires were repaired and the loom secured back into its correct position.

Got an electrical problem that you—or another garage—can’t quite get to the bottom of? Drop me a message. From broken wiring and battery drains to more involved diagnostic faults, I’m always happy to take a look.

šŸ”§ Not just cars…

A few recent jobs showing the variety that comes through the door:

First up was a failed PCB from a jukebox. The original onboard battery had reached the end of its life, so I removed it and soldered in flying leads with a separate battery holder. This means the customer can easily replace the batteries themselves in future without needing any further soldering. šŸŽ¶šŸ”‹

Next was a digger with a complete electrical failure to the upper cab. The loom had chafed through against the cab and blown a fuse. A bypass fuse had subsequently been fitted, which allowed further damage to occur within the wiring loom. The damaged wiring was replaced, affected connectors were depinned and renewed where necessary, and the machine was soon back up and running. 🚜⚔

Finally, a Discovery 4 with a no-crank fault, diagnosed on behalf of another garage. Because it had reportedly cut out while driving and had transmission-related fault codes stored, a gearbox issue was initially suspected. Testing showed those codes were a consequence of the gearbox override cable being pulled during recovery—not the cause of the no-crank.

The starting fault was eventually traced to a blown high-current starter fuse. It now requires further strip-down to establish why it failed: best case, a failed starter motor; worst case, an internal engine fault. The engine had previously turned at the crank pulley, so it may be that the starter itself is the primary fault—or a secondary casualty of a deeper mechanical issue. Either way, the electrical diagnosis has narrowed down exactly where the garage needs to investigate next. šŸ”

Classic Cibie spotlights fitted and working on this Ford Es**rt.

Relay-controlled and triggered from the high beam, so they operate automatically alongside the vehicle’s main lights without putting the extra load through the original lighting circuit.

They definitely complete the old-school rally look! šŸšŸ’”

A few recent jobs through the door 🚘 āš”ļø

⚔ Discovery 4 no crank/no start – Traced to blown fuses supplying the engine ECU and keyless vehicle module following a visit by the fuse 🧚. Restoring the supplies allowed the engine to start, but diagnosis also identified corrupted KVM data, requiring replacement keys.

⚔ Fiat Ducato intermittent wipers – Confirmed the BCM was receiving the correct inputs from the combination switch. Powers, grounds and motor control signals were then load-tested directly at the connector. All circuits passed, confirming an internal motor fault. Replacement currently awaiting parts.

⚔ Canal boat starter battery – Installed a mains-powered trickle charger to keep the battery topped up while the engine is left unused for extended periods.

šŸ”§ Generator compression loss – Carrying out a top-end rebuild to rectify the mechanical compression fault, awaiting the correct valves šŸ˜‚

Cars or canal boats, it all comes down to testing the circuit and finding where it fails ⚔

A recent airbag warning light turned out to be an open circuit caused by a loose connector underneath the passenger seat. It had likely been disturbed by items stored under there. Connector secured, readings verified against the driver’s side and the fault was sorted.

On a canal boat leisure system, I found the main battery earth terminal had cracked and separated, along with a heavily corroded crocodile clip being used to feed the trickle charger. Both connections were repaired properly.

The boat also wouldn’t shut down from the stop button. The ignition switch wasn’t providing the required feed, so I added a fused ignition supply and restored normal operation.

A few different faults, all found through proper electrical testing šŸ”§
