Volkswagen Arteon in the garage with overheating issues.

Through some diagnostics we determined that the coolant pump was faulty.
These engines have a variable flow coolant pump. Instead of pumping full power all the time, it has a little sleeve that slides over the impeller blades to limit flow.

When it’s cold, the sleeve covers the blades so almost no coolant flows, helping the engine warm up faster. When the engine’s hot, the sleeve pulls back and the pump works normally.
The sleeve can stick after a few years, especially if there’s a bit of corrosion or debris in the system. Once it gets stuck, depending on the position, your engine can overheat or take forever to warm up.

As it’s driven by the timing belt we did a belt and pump to cure the issue.

Total coincidence this week, had two XJ’s in on the same day.

The Daimler Super 8. Supercharged V8 , in for coolant leak. Turned out to be the radiator.

The Jag XJ8. V8 in for MOT and a wheel bearing.

Nice to have something different in the workshop.
