Programming (or Flashing): This refers to the installation of entirely new software or firmware onto a control module. This procedure is typically performed when replacing a faulty computer, executing a significant system update, or activating a new, uninitialized module. It frequently necessitates factory-level software and J2534 pass-through devices to facilitate direct data download from the manufacturer.
Coding: This entails the adjustment of parameters and preferences within existing software. Rather than altering the core operating system, coding instructs the vehicle on which of its existing hardware features to activate (e.g., enabling digital seat warmers) or how specific features should operate. Coding can be utilized to unlock latent factory features, such as automatic window rolling or folding side mirrors.
Modern vehicles are essentially sophisticated mobile computing platforms, incorporating numerous interconnected ECUs. Reprogramming is indispensable for several key reasons:
