Hit a pothole recently?

Even if everything feels fine afterwards, pothole impacts can cause damage that isn’t always immediately obvious.

Has your car suddenly got a lot louder? Don’t just turn the radio up!

A blowing, damaged or failing exhaust isn’t simply an annoying noise. It could affect your car’s safety, emissions and road-worthiness.

Signs of an exhaust problem can include:

🔧 Louder than usual engine or exhaust noise
🔧 Rattling or knocking underneath the car
🔧 A hissing or blowing sound
🔧 Exhaust fumes or unusual smells
🔧 Reduced performance or fuel efficiency

An exhaust that’s excessively noisy can also result in an MOT failure, so it’s worth getting any change in sound investigated sooner rather than later.

Got a puncture? It doesn’t always mean you need a new tyre.

Whether a puncture can be safely repaired depends on where the damage is and the condition of the tyre.

Under the BS AU 159 guidelines used by the tyre industry, a repair may be possible when:

🔧 The puncture is within the permitted central repair area of the tread
🔧 The damage is within the allowable size for that tyre
🔧 The tyre hasn’t been damaged by being driven while flat or severely underinflated
🔧 There’s no significant damage to the sidewall, structure or previous repairs

Punctures towards the shoulder or in the sidewall generally cannot be safely repaired.

The tyre needs to be removed from the wheel and properly inspected before a repair decision can be made, so don’t assume a nail automatically means a new tyre.

A few quick checks under the bonnet could help prevent an unwanted stop at the side of the road.

Before setting off, check your:
