20sixmtb - it’s racing in the Chilterns Set in the heart of the Chiltern Hills, the event recalls the birth of competitive mountain biking in the UK.

The Summit 26 MTB Classic is a multi-discipline off-road event, exclusively for mountain bikes built in the last century and organised by Summit MTB Club. Thirty years ago the Chilterns were home to the UK's first proper MTB race and subsequent series called the Wendover Bash and the Summit 26 is a unique revival event called the ‘Retro Bash’. The Summit 26 takes place at the challenging Lotts Woo

d MTB race course in Hyde Heath, near Amersham, south Buckinghamshire. It attracts a wide variety of machines from early rigid mountain bikes from the 1980s and early 1990s through the first full sussers. There were very few disc brakes around back then and so we are expecting to see these bikes stopped by rubber blocks. Recalling the multi-discipline format of the sport’s early days, the ‘Retro Bash’ features a tricky trials section, all out time trial, fun bomb-hole challenge course and a two by two hillclimb race. All sections are timed and feature penalties to decide the winners. Now in its third year, the 2017 Summit 26 MTB Classic is on Sunday 1st October starting at 09.00 and finishing by 14.00. The total entry is limited to 35 riders.

Well that was much needed blast from the past.

This group of old buggers used to race, travel and generally blast mountain bikes all over the for many years.

Life has overtaken us and we are no longer the young bucks, the bikes have gotten a lot bigger and the legs a little slower.

Great to see some friends I have not seen in too long. Same again soon chaps. Same again soon!!

New bike day - well new frame. Actually it’s new old stock. Either way it’s bloody brilliant and with the light wheels and carbon bits is lighter than my old voodoo even with all the bags and bike packing bits added.

Some setup to do as my lowest gear needs adjusting, the brakes need work as they are comically bad. Can’t remember the last time I set up cantis.

But I love it and getting used to it was almost instant. Some more rides to get done before the 360 in June.

Let the post ride cleanup begin

Roll on summer and some dry trails

This would be an awesome route in the summer, however todays mud highlights are:

1) riding downhill coming to a complete stop and getting off and the bike staying stood up in the mud
2) wading through giant puddles that really smell
3) pushing for about a mile through slick mud where motorbikes and horses had made the trail soup and I had zero traction
4) falling over a nettle bush
5) awesome descents off the ridge lines that will be revisited in the summer
