📢 The rules for booking a practical car driving test are changing.

From 31 March 2026, learner drivers and approved driving instructors (ADIs) will only be able to change a driving test booking up to 2 times.

A change includes:
- changing the date or time
- changing the test centre
- swapping an appointment with another learner

If you’re an ADI, please make sure your pupils only book their test when they’re ready as swapping between pupils will count towards this limit. You can set times when you're available to take your pupils to their driving tests. This stops your pupils from booking tests at times that do not work for you.

👉 When this comes into force, everyone with a driving test booked will have 2 changes available, regardless of how many changes they may have already made.

This change is part of the outcome of our consultation to improve the way driving tests are booked.

This could have ended very differently.

A young man.
Four weeks after passing his test.
Sober.
Legal.
Doing what many new drivers do without realising the risk.

It was a damp, unlit country road.
A bend taken at 60mph.
A slight clip of the grass verge.
And in seconds, control was gone.

The impact was head on.

The driver coming the other way was completely innocent.
She did nothing wrong.
She was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

She walked away with extensive bruising and a whiplash injury.
A fact I will be eternally grateful for.
Because the outcome could so easily have been catastrophic.

This is not a post about blame.

It is about understanding.

New drivers often believe that driving at the speed limit means driving safely.
It does not.

Country roads are not designed for forgiveness.
They are narrow.
They are poorly lit.
They hide standing water, mud, leaves and soft verges.
At speed, a tiny mistake becomes an uncontrollable one.

A grass verge is not harmless.
Clipping it at speed can pull the car off line, unsettle the suspension and send the vehicle across the road before the driver has time to react.

This is why experience matters.
This is why confidence without understanding is dangerous.
And this is why slowing down on unfamiliar roads is not weakness.
It is intelligence.

If you are a new driver reading this, please understand something important.

You do not need to use all the speed available to you.
You do not need to prove anything.
Arriving safely is the only success that matters.

And if you are a parent, remember this.
Passing a test does not mean your child is fully prepared for every road.
That comes later.
Through patience.
Through caution.
Through choosing safety over speed.

She was lucky.
Many are not.

Let this be a lesson learned without a life being lost.

Slow down on roads that do not give second chances.
