A truck being off the road is one problem. Having no idea when you’re getting it back is another.

That’s why we try to keep customers updated while their vehicle is with us. If an inspection turns up extra work, we’d rather explain what we’ve found, what actually needs doing and get a decision quickly than have the truck sat in the yard waiting.

We’re working on making that even easier through the WH Commercials customer portal too — maintenance records, workshop documents and vehicle history all in one place, with automatic reminders being added for upcoming PMIs.

It’s being built around what we’d want to see ourselves as a fleet operator.

We can collect trailers, bring them into the workshop for repairs or maintenance and get them turned around ready for when they’re needed again. It saves sending a driver over just to drop one off and then having to arrange another collection afterwards.

We already do this with our own fleet, so if collecting and returning the trailer makes life easier, just ask when you book it in.

Tuesday and it’s a brake testing day at WH Commercials.

A roller brake test gives you a proper picture of what’s happening at each wheel — not just whether the vehicle stops, but whether the brakes are balanced and performing as they should.

It’s useful between PMIs, before MOT or simply when you want to know exactly where you stand before sending a vehicle back out to work.

We test our own fleet through the rollers as well as customer trucks and trailers, so if you need one checking, give us a call and we’ll get you booked in.

Monday morning and this one’s about the paperwork behind the spanners.

A good maintenance record should tell you exactly what was checked, what was found and what was done about it. That’s why we’re putting more of our workshop records through our own customer portal, giving customers a clearer view of the work carried out on their vehicles and trailers.

Less chasing paperwork and a better maintenance trail when you actually need it.

It’s something we use for our own fleet too, so it’s being built around how commercial vehicles are actually operated rather than just adding another bit of admin.

Saturday morning and one of the service vans is out doing a repair on site.

Not every job needs a truck or trailer bringing into the workshop. If it can be sorted where it’s parked, we’ll get out to it and deal with it there — particularly when bringing the vehicle back to us would mean more downtime than the repair itself.

Our vans are set up for commercial vehicle work and also support our own haulage fleet when they’re away from the yard.

A bit of trailer work in the workshop today.

Trailers don’t always get the same attention as the unit pulling them, but worn bushes, brakes, air leaks and lighting faults soon turn into bigger problems if they’re left.

We’ve got our own trailers working all over the country every week, so we know how important it is to get defects sorted properly and get them back out earning.

Tyres are one of those things that can look fine at a quick glance and still cause you trouble when the vehicle gets out on the road.

Uneven wear, low pressures or damage on the inside edge can easily get missed until it turns into downtime — or worse, a roadside call-out.

We check tyres properly as part of looking after our own fleet, and we can do the same for customer trucks and trailers. If something needs replacing, we’d rather find it in the yard than at the side of the road.

Today’s focus is PMI inspections. They’re not just a box-ticking exercise. A decent inspection should pick up wear and defects early enough to actually do something about them, rather than leaving them until they become an MOT failure or a roadside problem.

We carry out PMIs for customer fleets as well as our own, with any defects clearly reported so you know what needs doing and what can be planned for.

a bit of preventative maintenance rather than waiting for something to fail.

That’s often the difference between sorting a small issue while the vehicle is already off the road and getting a phone call next week when it’s stranded somewhere.

We look after our own trucks and trailers the same way. If we spot something starting to wear, we’d rather deal with it there and then than see how long it lasts.

We can collect and deliver trailers for workshop work, so you don’t have to lose a unit and driver bringing one over to us and then coming back for it.
