This little fella was recently spotted on one of our dive expeditions in the waters of Loch Sunart. It’s a European Flounder, one of the many species of flatfish to be found around the coast of Great Britain.

Flounders can grow up to 50cm in length and have the ability to camouflage their upper bodies to match their surroundings, a process known as ‘background adaptation’. They achieve this by using special cells called chromatophores. These contain pigments that are aggregated or dispersed throughout the cell in response to nerve signals, creating paler or darker colours.

Flounders will also bury themselves in sand as a defence mechanism, leaving just their eyes protruding above the surface to watch for danger.

These are just one of the amazing marine species that divers regularly find in Loch Sunart and the seas surrounding Laga Bay, the base for Ardnamurchan Charters.

We’re one of the few places around the West Highland Peninsulas – Ardnamurchan, Sunart, Ardgour, Morvern and Moidart – to have our own on-site, high performance compressor for filling dive tanks. The compressor is safety approved for breathing air purity and is capable of filling multiple tanks quickly and efficiently, enabling our dive expeditions to spend as much time as possible out on the water.

Add to this our self-catering accommodation, drying room, workshop, pontoon and private mooring, plus a wealth of local dive sites, and you have a comprehensive package of support facilities for dive clubs looking for a new and exciting expedition base.

The entire length of Loch Sunart has been designated a Marine Protected Area (MPA). In short, this means that a wide range of habitats, species, geology and undersea landforms are protected by law. Commercial fishing activities, especially trawling, long-lining and dredging, are prohibited; creel fishing is, however, allowed throughout the area, with the exception of Loch Teacuis, which runs off of Loch Sunart and hosts rare aggregations of serpulid or organ-pipe worms.

This year’s dive season may be coming to an end but we’re already planning our dive support for 2027. We’ll be building on our already great offer for dive clubs looking for a comprehensive package of support facilities, which includes accommodation, drying room, on-site dive air, pontoon and private moorings, workshop and, of course, the local knowledge and experience of our resident team.

We regularly spot dolphins and porpoises on our wildlife charters. These playful creatures seem to love showing off around the boat, much to the amusement and fascination of those onboard.

There are several species of dolphins that live around the west coast of Scotland. These include Common, Risso’s and Bottlenose dolphins. The latter includes two pods, nicknamed the ‘Barra Boys’ and the ‘Inner Hebrides’; the first has around 20 animals and ranges around the isles of Barra and the Uists, while the second larger pod with 30-40 individuals moves up and down the coast between Skye and Arran.

What lays beneath the waters of Loch Sunart? This 19 mile-long sea loch is a divers’ paradise, containing a wealth of hidden treasures, just waiting to be discovered.

With a maximum depth of a little over 400 feet, and with a fascinating underwater geography, from flat sandy basins to craggy subsea ravines and reefs, the loch is home to a staggering variety of marine life. It’s a great area for dive expeditions, for trainee and experienced divers alike, while for those searching for even greater thrills it’s the gateway to the Sound of Mull and the islands of the Inner Hebrides.

As winter approaches, we’ll soon be taking a break from our wildlife cruises and dive charters. But until then, we still have Autumn availability during October and early November, for all those who’d like to explore Loch Sunart in search of wildlife on, under and above the water, from seals and porpoises to sea eagles and red deer.

Autumn often brings blue skies, crystal clear light and gentle breezes, while the hills are bathed in shades of red, brown and orange, making it one of the best times of year to spot wildlife.

Loch Sunart is home to many varied and wonderful underwater creatures.

Scuba-dive or snorkel its pristine waters and you’ll stand an excellent chance of encountering fish such as flapper skate, Atlantic cod and sand gobies, while on the rocks and seabed you’ll discover sea-fans, feather stars, heart cockles and the delightfully named ocean quahog, which is a species of edible clam.

Above the water you’ll see an equally diverse range of wildlife, from seals and otters to curlews and eagles.

Loch Teacuis is an important part of the wider Loch Sunart to the Sound of Jura Marine Protected Area (MPA).

Its importance is largely down to the presence of rare serpulid reefs, formed by organ pipe, or surpulid, marine tubeworms. These beautiful creatures have brilliant displays of fern-like red, orange and pink tentacles. Although they are widely found as individual pipe-worms they rarely grow together as a reef, which is what makes this aggregation in Loch Teacuis so special.
