Vincent Seifert
I’m Vincent, a 23-year-old mechanical engineering student from Dresden , and this is Pete, my 1989 944 S2 with 250000km on the clock.
He has pretty much no optional extras, not even ABS (standardized in 90). However, he is a rare Swiss-market first delivery and therefore came equipped with a transmission oil cooler.
I bought Pete at the beginning of this year as my 1st classic car, w/o having much experience working on cars. I’ve had a huge interest in old cars for a long time, have been passionate about photographing them, and during a 6-month internship in pre-development at Porsche Weissach, I was able to gain some really exciting insights into the automotive world.
That changed very quickly, shortly after buying him, I discovered that the little guy was developing quite bad bore scoring. I decided to learn everything I could about the 944 and carry out a complete engine rebuild in my home garage, with the help of my good friend .gu and my father. I also decided to replace pretty much everything showing signs of wear in the front area of the car.
The project has now been going on for about half a year, and I’m almost finished. During this time, the engine was bored to an oversize, and all the bearings, pistons, seals, belts, rollers, timing chain, fuel lines, water pump, and hydraulic lifters were replaced. On top of that, various parts were yellow zinc-plated, and the valve cover was powder-coated.
Besides the engine, I also replaced the engine mounts, installed a new clutch, replaced the wheel bearings and all the suspension bushings, replaced the brake lines, and fitted Pete with a set of Bilstein B6 dampers.
Once I’m finished, I want to simply enjoy driving the little guy for a while and go on various road trips.
After that, I’ll eventually tackle restoring the rear end of the car as well - the transaxle shaft, torsion bar suspension, and transmission - and at some point I’d also like to have the unfortunately rather tired-looking paintwork redone.
But everything in its own time.
