Headlights. This is a very distinctive feature that we have modernized while again paying tribute to the original car or more precisely his US cousin, called Le Car, that had smaller squared headlights.

Our LED headlights are of course way more efficient than the original but they also integrate nicely in the redesigned front end of the car. The DRL can be switched off if desired as we felt this wasn’t to everybody’ taste.

We have also integrated the fog lights (or long range lights) in the front bumper just like the original car but they are now partly hidden behind a grill, an item that was largely used in the 80’s (think Italian sports cars for instance). The grill theme expands throughout the car. More on that in a next post.

Finally the front turn signals are in the same place as on the original car but are now LED and thinner to better emphasize the front light system.

Wheels are a very important and often distinctive feature on a car. When it came to chose a wheel design for our Turbo Revolution Restoration program, we ended up paying homage to the original design, just like we did for the whole car.

The original R5 Turbo wheels are part of the iconic design of the car. We thus offer a new version of these wheels called Turbo Revival, 16 inches in the front, 17 in the rear. Wheels are a very important and often distinctive feature on a car. When it came to chose a wheel design for our Turbo Revolution Restoration program, we ended up paying homage to the original design, just like we did for the whole car.

The engine. This is obviously the heart of the car and it has to be addressed the same way the rest has : respecting the DNA of the original car while bringing modern technology to it.

Our engine builder is one of the world leading motorsport company. They bring their knowledge and enthusiasm to the project in line with our vision. We have thus decided to keep the original engine block, for several reasons but mainly because the Cleon turbocharged pushrod inline 4 has a very distinctive noise that we wanted to keep. Again think DNA of the original car.

It also makes sense to enhance the heart of the car and not throw in any modern engine and lose the soul of the R5 Turbo.

The engine block is kept as is with custom crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, valves, pushrods, rockers, camshaft, exhaust header, intake manifold, turbocharger, and ECU . There is some room to vastly improve the original cylinder head. We also plan on building a complete bespoke one for even greater performance.

The crankshaft is bespoke and optimized to limit vibrations and offer greater mechanical output.

A bespoke dry sump system is installed. The intake manifold is reworked for greater performance.

The ECU management system uses the last state of the art technology to control the wastegate, the throttle, the global power / torque band, allowing several driving modes.

The turbocharger is electric driven and allows a lot of flexibility in the way power is delivered. In confort mode you want to drive a civilized car in the city or on wet conditions with great drivability. On the other hand a Maxi mode will provide max output (340 HP / 400 Nm of torque) with a great amount of old school turbo lag and the sensations of a great and versatile sports car.

Some technical details on the R5 Turbo restored through the Turbo Revolution Restoration
Program. A few words from our chassis and suspensions partner :

‘Balance over grip’ : The Renault 5 turbo was defined by its low weight and small platform, an ideal template for tarmac rally but its downside was that it made the car inherently unstable for confidence inspired road driving.

To approach this and create a car not with huge grip but great balance, we have engineered an increased wheel base and track, with revisions to wishbone location that maintains ideal geometry and makes the car much more predictable in nature.

Here are few samples of what we compiled into the design stages of the R5 Turbo chassis restored through the Turbo Revolution Restoration Program :

‘Aero blade wishbones inspired by the ground effect formula 1 cars are fabricated to allow clean air flow and lightweight structure yet retain strength whilet integrating features such as brake lines running internally and via quick couplings’

‘A lateral thinking thought process for wishbones attachment allows non corruptive changes to axis points, allowing wide adjustments during road testing trials. The car benefits from amounts of anti squat and anti dive that create a very secure platform to control its mid/rear engine weight bias’

‘We consider pushrod actuated front dampers that clean up the front assemblies and allow much better damping control for the movement given, less corner weight and avoiding the issue of spring pre load for ride height changes’
