Its funny vehicles today give no hope to the common man /woman
in terms of hood up on a Saturday morning and fix it .The layman in us will not allow because cars have moved beyond our basic understanding of them .So being able to keep ahead of the game so that one can fix or at least get their head around those techno faults requires some commitment .
I suppose the question now is what can the layman in us do ...........well join a forum of local enthusiasts who have attached some passion to knowing more about their own particular vehicle so that you in turn may get to know yours .
Believe me it can help when seeking advice ,but always back that up with professional opinion of which there are also forums dedicated to your car and its minor or major eccentricities.

Amazing how many cars go unchecked these days for even the most basic of day today or should I say weekly drivers checks.
You know (or perhaps do not)oil level,tyre wear,coolant level and windscreen washer bottle .
It seems the that the general public is mot as informed ad should be .Afteral we are legally obliged to make sure that our cars are fit for purpose on our roads.
So book your car in for a safety check to make sure that all is well .Or learn how to do your own drivers checks safely especially for those long motorway drives .
