🚨‼️READ CAPTION 👇🏻

Guess what this project is?

One thing is certain: I am acting as the owner’s representative and conducting full new-build construction follow-up surveys on behalf of my client.

My advice?

Don’t try to save €200,000 by avoiding the appointment of an experienced marine surveyor for a major new-build project.

Because in many cases, you may end up losing double, triple, or even the entire value of your investment.

I have seen projects where the cost of proper supervision represented only a small percentage of the total investment, yet the absence of professional oversight led to catastrophic financial consequences.

Be smart and know where to invest your money.

A dream project can quickly turn into a nightmare.Excitement can become frustration.A source of pride can become a source of stress and financial loss.

At MS Marine Surveyor, transparency and client protection are our priorities from day one.

For a new-build project valued at approximately USD 10 million, a complete owner’s representation and survey follow-up package may cost around €200,000 plus VAT, travel expenses, and project-related costs.

That represents roughly 2% of the total investment.

Would you rather invest 2% to protect your assets, or risk losing 50%... or even 100% of your investment?

The choice is obvious.

Protect your project.Protect your investment.Protect your future.

EXPERT STORY n•11 – The Coating That Covered the Problem

At first glance, the cargo hold looked impeccable.

Fresh coating.
Uniform color.
No visible corrosion.
No obvious structural concerns.

To most observers, it was a well-maintained vessel.

But in marine surveying, appearances can be misleading.

During our inspection, we noticed subtle differences in the coating texture around several longitudinal stiffeners. Nothing alarming to the naked eye, but enough to justify a more detailed investigation.

We decided to perform Ultrasonic Thickness Measurements (UTM) across multiple locations.

The results completely changed the picture.

Beneath the new coating, several structural members showed significant steel wastage, with thickness reductions approaching and, in some locations, exceeding the allowable limits.

The coating had not preserved the steel.

It had simply hidden its condition.

Further examination revealed that the surface preparation before painting had been insufficient, allowing corrosion to continue beneath the protective system. In some critical areas, the remaining steel thickness had already compromised the original design margin.

Had this vessel continued trading without detection, progressive loading cycles could have accelerated cracking, deformation, or costly structural repairs during the next special survey.

Our recommendations were immediate:

✔ Full steel renewal in affected areas
✔ Removal of compromised coating and complete surface preparation
✔ Renewal of the protective coating system in accordance with manufacturer specifications
✔ Follow-up ultrasonic mapping after repairs to establish a new structural baseline
✔ Inclusion of these locations in future risk-based inspection programs

The owner was surprised.

“The hold looked brand new.”

And that’s exactly the lesson.

A fresh coat of paint is not proof of structural integrity.

The true condition of a vessel lies beneath the surface.

As surveyors, our responsibility is not to inspect what everyone can see.

EXPERT STORY #10 – The Sound That Didn’t Belong

Everything was operating normally.

No alarms.
No abnormal vibration levels.
No temperature deviation reported by the monitoring system.

During sea trial and operational checks, the propulsion line appeared stable.

To most people, the gearbox sounded perfectly healthy.

But during close-range inspection inside the engine room, we detected something unusual:

A very slight irregular metallic sound during load transition.

Barely audible.
Intermittent.
Easy to ignore.

But not normal.

This type of acoustic anomaly is exactly the kind of detail that separates routine inspection from real condition assessment.

We immediately extended the diagnostics.

The investigation included:

• Localized vibration verification
• Oil condition analysis
• Thermal comparison under load
• Shaft alignment review
• Acoustic monitoring directly on gearbox casing

The results revealed the beginning of an internal failure process:

Early-stage bearing degradation inside the gearbox assembly

At this stage, the vessel remained operational.
No alarm thresholds had yet been exceeded.

But internally, microscopic wear had already started progressing.

Metallic contamination particles were identified in the lubricating oil, confirming progressive bearing surface deterioration.

The danger?

This type of failure develops silently.

And once vibration levels become noticeable from outside, the damage is often already advanced.

If left untreated, the likely consequences would have been:
• Progressive bearing collapse
• Gear tooth misalignment
• Secondary shaft damage
• Loss of propulsion
• Emergency drydock intervention
• Major operational downtime…

🔥EXPERT STORY n.9 – The Measurement That Was Too Perfect

Everything matched.

Too perfectly.

We were appointed to carry out a ballast tank inspection on a commercial vessel as part of a technical survey.

The tank was accessible.
The structure appeared clean.
Documentation was complete.

And the ultrasonic thickness report?

Flawless.

Every reading across multiple frames and structural members showed identical values.

At first glance, this looked reassuring.

But in reality it made no sense.

Steel does not corrode uniformly.
Not in ballast tanks.
Not under real operating conditions.

Corrosion is irregular by nature:

• Flow variations
• Oxygen concentration differences
• Sediment accumulation
• Coating breakdown in isolated zones

So when everything is “perfect”…

It usually isn’t.

We repeated the measurements.

Same results.

Then we changed the approach:

✔ Independent equipment
✔ New measurement grid
✔ Randomized test points

That’s when the truth appeared.

The original readings had not been measured.

They had been pre-recorded and reused.

Real measurements revealed:

*Localized steel wastage already beyond acceptable limits
*Critical zones weakened without detection
*Structural integrity compromised

The vessel was presented as compliant.

But in reality it was operating with hidden structural risk.

This is where experience matters.

Because the danger was not corrosion.

It was false confidence.

In marine surveying, perfection is not reassurance.
It is often the first warning sign.

EXPERT STORY #8 – The Detail That Shouldn’t Exist

Everything looked perfect.

We were appointed on a high-value commercial vessel for a pre-purchase survey. Class was valid, documentation aligned, recent maintenance completed.

Nothing raised concern.

Until one detail didn’t make sense.

Inside the engine room, during a routine inspection, we noticed a slight temperature imbalance on a cooling pipeline.

Nothing alarming. No alarms. No leaks.

Just… something not consistent.

Most would ignore it.

We didn’t.

We extended the inspection using thermal verification and manual tracing of the circuit.

The result revealed a partial internal restriction caused by scaling combined with deformation.

Externally: perfect
Operationally: acceptable
Internally: compromised

This meant uneven cooling — leading over time to:

• Local overheating
• Accelerated wear
• Potential critical failure

The pipe was later opened.

The condition confirmed exactly our findings.

Some defects don’t appear. They reveal themselves only to those who look deeper.
