The Sof Omar Caves are absolutely amazing! It is the longest cave in Ethiopia, stretching 15.1 kilometres (9.4 mi) in length. Back in 1972, it held the title of the longest cave in Africa. Legend has it that Sof Omar was a revered Muslim holy man who resided in the region, while Ayiew was his daughter. The local words for 'name' and 'cave' are Maco and Holuca, respectively. This site has long been a religious hub, revered by both Islam and the local Oromo traditional religion. One of the highlights of the caves is the stunning "Chamber of Columns" filled with numerous pillars. In 2011, the Sof Omar Caves were added to the UNESCO tentative list, potentially earning a spot on the official list in the future. Truly, Sof Omar is an incredible place and a must-visit destination on this planet.
