🪪🚗If you have a Spanish licence, to drive outside the EU and EEA, you need to obtain an International Driving Permit. The document should be carried with your actual licence. (Not required for driving in the UK)

💻🏢The application can be made online with a digital certificate or in person at the DGT office. The online authorisation once made can be collected within a few days and without the need for an appointment. The fee is currently 10.51€ and the permit lasts for 1 year, or until your licence expires if that is before.

What you need

✅Colour photo on a white background 26mm x 32mm
✅Identification Residency card/TIE/Passport

Information from Lifestyle Spain about how to renew an expiring Spanish Driving Licence.

A Spanish Driving Licence can be renewed up to 90 days before its expiry date. The process can be completed at an authorised DGT medical centre.

The medical centre will
☑️Complete a medical questionnaire, an eyesight, hearing and coordination test.
☑️Take a New photo.
☑️Complete your application form.
☑️Submit your renewal electronically to the DGT
☑️Issue you with a paper temporary licence.

Your licence once issued will be sent to your home address. 🪪🏡

The documents required
🔵Existing licence
🔵Padron (if your address has changed)
🔵TIE or residency card

The cost of a renewal is usually between 40€-60€ and includes the DGT fee.

‼️If your licence has already expired, you are not permitted to drive until you receive the new one.

‼️Drivers aged 70 and over are exempt from paying the renewal fee.

🚙Under 65s, licences are valid for 10 years.
🚙65 and over, licences are valid for 5 years.

‼️The medical centre can request a licence with a shorter validity (eg 1–4 years) if they detect a health condition that requires frequent monitoring. Large vehicles may have different restrictions and you should check these with the centre.
