How I sail WITHOUT Starlink, gasp! ☺ Part of the joy of is the digital detox, but we all want as much weather info as we can get. Especially in a climate of increasing extremes. How to balance these needs? Have a look at the short video I made explaining how I do it.

Despite the many upsides Starlink can offer cruisers and others, they do generally suck (rocket debris, night sky pollution, fascist megolamania) and are currently hiking their tariffs for cruisers so reliable alternatives are worth looking into.

I really like not having internet onboard when I'm sailing offshore...

Buntline hitch

An ideal knot for permanent applications, like a halyard. You would have to cut it undone though. Used here for a clip on the end of my new dinghy painter line. Pre-tightened on a winch.

Anyone interested in sailing with me from the Azores to the Algarve leaving mid August? About 7-10 days depending on wind, or possibly lack of wind to start with in the Azores. Maybe some Azores sailing first.

Standfast 40 yacht, well equipped, veggie/vegan boat (do what you like ashore!). Shared costs on food and fuel, and a contribution to the boat welcome. Sailing experience not essential. Looking at week starting 17 August, weather dependent.

Salvador, Brazil to Horta, Açores in 40 days!!

What a trip... on the last night the babystay broke, thanks for holding on! The first people I chatted to ashore were Brasilieros, really friendly place Horta. And they put on a party, so my first night 'of rest' I didn't get home until 3am!

Definitely on the rest now! Got some laundry done but chilling out and then give Pelangi some TLC in the coming days. Wahey!

Right now I'm sailing offshore, out in the middle of the Atlantic. But over on my YouTube channel (link in bio) there's a new video showing where things have got to with my DIY solid doghouse, two years on from building it. This video shows you the end results in more detail with various add-ons since the early days. This doghouse has now done about 8,000 nautical miles so it has been well tested!

If you have any questions, please ask away in the comments. I will answer them all, eventually, but for most of June I am sailing offshore and I don't do Starlink so you'll have to wait a bit :)

Before I left Brazil I removed my anchor, which I don't usually do, but I wanted to shift as much weught aft and lower, and really seal up the hole where the chain enters the locker as much as possible.
