🚗 Austin Healey 3000 Mk1 – Full Engine Rebuild 🔧
What started as “just a head gasket” quickly became something much bigger…
This beautiful Austin Healey 3000 Mk1 arrived at CarFix Garage suffering from poor running, misfiring, low compression, and oil leaks around the head gasket area. Initially, the plan was straightforward — remove the cylinder head, inspect the gasket, repair the leak, and get the car running properly again.
But as every classic car enthusiast knows… once you open up an old engine, the real story often begins.
Further inspection revealed wear throughout the engine, inconsistent compression, and multiple issues that simply couldn’t be ignored. Rather than patching it up, the decision was made to rebuild the engine properly from the ground up.
🔧 Work carried out included:
• Full engine strip-down & rebuild
• Crankshaft regrind
• New bearings throughout
• New piston rings
• Full cylinder head rebuild
• New valves, guides & springs
• Timing chain & sprockets replaced
• New oil pump
• Rear oil seal conversion
• Cooling system overhaul
• Weber 45 carburettor setup
• CSI electronic ignition upgrade
• Full engine degree timing & setup
The original camshaft was retained to preserve the character and soul of the engine while improving reliability and drivability.
And with classic straight-six engines running Weber carburettors, the rebuild itself is only half the battle… countless hours went into fine tuning, balancing, timing adjustments, and perfecting throttle response to get this Healey running exactly as it should.
The result?
An engine that runs smoother, stronger, and more reliably — while still keeping the character that makes the Austin Healey so special.
We’ve included footage and photos from every stage of the rebuild process, from strip-down and machining through to final assembly and setup.
Classic cars are never “just a quick job”… and that’s exactly why we love them.
