MCV and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited Partner to Establish BME for Manufacturing Electric Vehicle Battery Systems and Energy Storage Solutions in Egypt

In line with the Egyptian government’s direction, under the leadership of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, to deepen local manufacturing, localize advanced industries and technologies, and strengthen Egypt’s capabilities in automotive manufacturing and components, particularly electric vehicles and battery systems, and driven by the strategic vision of Eng. Karim Ghabbour, Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles (MCV) today announced the establishment of Battery Manufacturing Egypt (BME), an independent company specializing in advanced battery systems for electric vehicles and energy storage solutions, through a strategic partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, one of the world’s leading battery technology companies.
BME aims to establish a specialized industrial base for battery system manufacturing in Egypt, initially focusing on batteries for heavy-duty commercial vehicles, with plans to expand into passenger vehicle batteries and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), addressing the growing needs of the transportation and energy sectors while opening new opportunities for manufacturing and exports.
The partnership brings together Egyptian manufacturing capabilities and engineering expertise with the advanced technology, production equipment, and technical support provided by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, enabling BME to manufacture battery systems in accordance with the highest global quality and manufacturing standards.
BME will provide vehicle manufacturers and assemblers in the Egyptian market, across different brands, with access to locally manufactured battery systems. This will help reduce reliance on imports and associated shipping and logistics costs, bring battery systems closer to vehicle production lines, and support faster response to market requirements and greater flexibility in developing electric vehicle programs.
The project represents an initial investment exceeding EGP 2 billion in its first phase, with an annual production capacity of 1 GWh.
BME plans to increase its annual production capacity in the second phase to 5 GWh, while expanding its portfolio to include passenger vehicle batteries and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) linked to renewable energy sources.
The project targets a local manufacturing content of up to 40%, alongside the development of a local supplier base and new opportunities for Egyptian companies to participate in the value chain associated with battery and electric vehicle manufacturing. The project will also create new employment opportunities and contribute to developing specialized Egyptian technical and engineering talent in battery technology and advanced manufacturing.
H.E. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, and H.E. Eng. Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, witnessed the signing ceremony, where Mr. Maged Waheeb, CEO of BME, signed the agreement alongside representatives of the strategic partners, marking the official establishment of BME and the launch of the project.

With the launch of BME, Egypt is taking a practical step toward establishing a specialized industrial capability in battery systems, with a clear path extending from heavy-duty commercial vehicles to passenger vehicles and energy storage solutions. With the targeted capacity of 5 GWh annually, the project represents a significant foundation for a scalable battery industry whose impact can extend across manufacturing, supply chains, and related technical services, strengthening Egypt’s role in the future of transportation and energy.
