Got this 993 Carrera engine in for resealing. At 150k kms it was running strong but leaked a good amount of oil, mostly from the cylinder bases. At this mileage, just resealing it doesn’t cover it as the valve guides usually show an amount of wear that we don’t feel comfortable releasing it back on the road with, so we rebuilt the cylinder heads. Cylinders were out of spec but pistons were fine, so the customer opted for new cylinders and piston rings to give it the “just like new” spec. And of course, while we were in there, we replaced rod bearings and rod bolts, just to be on the safe side. Not the common scope of a top-end rebuild, but as can be seen here, well worth it. The rod bearings certainly wouldn’t have lasted much longer and would’ve caused a severe, thus very expensive, engine failure. Rod bearings can last a lot longer than this, but in this case it is apparent that deferred maintenance and/or oil of inferior quality is the cause for prematurely wore out bearings. So, kids, don’t skip oil changes and only use the good stuff, mkay?
