Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagode – Baujahr 1971 – 89.900 EUR

Zum Verkauf steht ein Mercedes-Benz 280 SL der Baureihe W113 aus dem letzten Produktionsjahr der legendären Pagode.

Das Fahrzeug wurde klassisch und mit besonderem Augenmerk auf den Erhalt seiner originalen Substanz restauriert. Die Karosserie befand sich in einer bemerkenswert guten Ausgangsbasis: Es mussten keine kompletten Blechteile erneuert werden. Lediglich einige wenige Roststellen wurden im Rahmen der Restaurierung fachgerecht instand gesetzt.

Dieser außergewöhnliche Erhaltungszustand ist vor allem auf die Geschichte des Fahrzeugs zurückzuführen. Bereits 1988 wurde die Pagode stillgelegt und anschließend über viele Jahre trocken und warm eingelagert, bevor Ende 2018 mit der Restaurierung begonnen wurde.

Die seltene serienmäßige Rotmetallic-Lackierung in Verbindung mit der hellen Innenausstattung verleiht dem Roadster eine besonders elegante und zeitgenössische Erscheinung.

Zu den weiteren Besonderheiten gehören die deutsche Erstauslieferung, die ausschließlich deutsche Zulassungshistorie sowie der noch vorhandene originale Fahrzeugbrief von 1971 – umgangssprachlich als „Pappdeckelbrief“ bezeichnet.

Der 2,8-Liter-Sechszylindermotor leistet 170 PS. Eine Servolenkung gehört ebenfalls zur Ausstattung. TÜV-Abnahme, Begutachtung für das H-Kennzeichen und ein aktuelles Gutachten werden derzeit durchgeführt.

Eine klassische Pagode mit seltener Farbgebung, überzeugender Karosseriesubstanz und nachvollziehbarer Historie. Kein Fahrzeug, das ausschließlich stehen soll – dieser Roadster möchte gefahren und erlebt werden.

Our work was already making headlines around the world in the mid-1980s.

These remarkable pages come from an extensive Japanese automotive magazine feature about us, the Styling Garage, our founder Chris Hahn and the extraordinary vehicles we designed, engineered and built in Hamburg.

This was not a Styling Garage advertisement. It was an independent editorial report from Japan documenting our international reputation and presenting an entire collection of our creations:

The SGS Biarritz, SGS 600 Royale, SGS St. Tropez, SGS Arrow C1, SGS 500 SEC Marbella and our exclusive stretched Mercedes-Benz limousines.

These historic pages show how we were perceived internationally at the time: not simply as a tuning company, but as a true coachbuilder with creativity, technical expertise and the courage to create automobiles that had never existed before.

Our work reached far beyond Germany. From Europe to Japan and many other parts of the world, our vehicles were photographed, reported on and admired by an international audience.

We did not merely own extraordinary cars.

We built it. We own it. And now, it is for sale.

This extraordinary SGS BMW 850i Cabriolet “Monte Carlo”, based on the legendary BMW E31, is one of only six surviving 850i Cabriolets worldwide.

At its heart is BMW’s iconic 5.0-litre V12 – but this car represents much more than a rare open-top version of the 8 Series. It is part of our own history.

We were not only responsible for building this automobile at the Styling Garage; the conversion was also developed with the engineering expertise of our own design and engineering office, which was responsible for many of our most sophisticated cabriolet projects.

Transforming the BMW 850i into a fully engineered Cabriolet required extensive structural reinforcement, precise coachbuilding and the development of a complete convertible roof system worthy of BMW’s twelve-cylinder flagship.

That is what distinguishes us from collectors who merely own these automobiles: we designed them, engineered them and built them.

A new guest has arrived at the Styling Garage Resort — and this one is coming home.

This is not simply a rare car that we own or display. *We built it.*

In 1984, Styling Garage created the **SGS Arrow C1** on the basis of a Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC from the C126 series. Its unmistakable design combines our legendary gullwing-door conversion with visual elements inspired by the Mercedes-Benz C111 experimental vehicle.

One particularly fascinating detail: the distinctive shapes were taken from original C111 components. This was not merely a loose interpretation — it was our way of transferring the character of one of Mercedes-Benz’s most famous experimental cars onto the luxurious C126 platform.

And this Arrow C1 already knew the spotlight long before arriving at our Resort. It played a memorable role in a German film starring *Thomas Gottschalk and Mike Krüger*.

So perhaps a little star attitude is only natural.

Today, the SGS Arrow C1 represents exactly what makes Styling Garage different: we do not simply collect extraordinary automobiles.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the A124 Cabriolet in 1991. We had already unveiled our W124-based “Biarritz” six years earlier — with the same roof kinematics.

In 1985, we at Styling Garage presented the Biarritz, our four-seat Cabriolet based on the newly introduced W124 Saloon.

At that time, no W124 Coupé existed. Mercedes-Benz introduced the Coupé in 1987, while the official A124 Cabriolet did not follow until 1991.

Our Biarritz featured four full-size seats, an electrohydraulically operated soft top and a tonneau cover. It was not merely a design study or a one-off show car, but a fully developed Cabriolet conversion offered to customers.

The decisive detail is the roof mechanism: the kinematics later used for the Mercedes-Benz A124 are demonstrably identical to those of our earlier SGS prototype. Contemporary witnesses also confirm that Mercedes-Benz had access to this vehicle.

For us, there is no doubt that the technical solution developed for our Biarritz was later adopted for the A124 Cabriolet. This story has been known for decades and, to our knowledge, has never been publicly denied by Mercedes-Benz.

The Story Behind the 1000SGS

It began with the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL of the W126 generation — one of the finest luxury saloons of its time.

But for the clients of Styling Garage, even the flagship Mercedes was only the starting point.

The 500 SEL was transformed with distinctive bodywork, an imposing new front design, exclusive wheels, bespoke leather interiors, extended wood trim and almost unlimited individual options. Telephones, televisions, bars, refrigerators and electrically adjustable rear seats turned the S-Class into a truly personal luxury automobile.

The result was considered not merely improved, but twice as exceptional as the original 500 SEL.

And so the 1000 SEL was born.

The number “1000” did not refer to engine capacity or horsepower. It represented the philosophy behind the automobile: taking an already extraordinary Mercedes-Benz and elevating it to an entirely new level.

The name later evolved into 1000SGS — unmistakably connected to its creator: Styling Garage Spezialkarosserien.

Every 1000SGS was individually commissioned. There was no standard specification, because no two customers had the same vision. Each vehicle became a unique expression of luxury, personality and automotive craftsmanship.

Today, 1000SGS represents more than a historic badge.

It stands for the courage to create something beyond series production.
For automobiles without compromise.
And for a legacy that began in Hamburg and continues today.
