When you swap the engine, you’re forced to decide what OEM electronics stay and what gets scrapped. For this build, the answer was simple: build a full custom wiring loom from scratch.
This Mazda MX-5 ND has a BMW B48 engine in it. Since is destined for the track, we stripped the chassis down to the bare essentials and mapped everything out on custom schematics. It’s a massive puzzle figuring out exact wire lengths and routing every single circuit back to the PDM mounted in the center of the car.
From there, we calculated the current draw for each system, sized up the wire gauges, and got to work. Sean and Milou spent hours laying out connectors, relays, and fuse blocks, making sense of what looked like a complete mess of wires.
After configuring the PDM, we ran our first power tests... and the systems lit up on command. Now that the loom is in place, we’re one big step closer to the first engine startup.

We almost lost the chance of the championship!
Hero drive!

For round 3 of the championship the MaX5 cup visited the circuit of Zolder in Belgium.
Due to a code 60 and a red flag qualified P6.

So why did we almost loose our chances in the championship?

In Race 1 whilst Maikel was moving up the order he started to notice an issue with the clutch. It started to slip and in a few laps it went from a little slip to no clutch at all, resulting in a DNF. A failed bearing pushed the pressure plate unevenly. With a championship where every point / position counts and the result of the race being the starting grid for the next race this was a major disappointment.

Between race 1 and 2 there was about 2hrs time and the team set to work to repair the clutch on a still very hot car.

With about 3min to spare the car drove out of the garage to join the back of the grid.

To not have another drop result Maikel started race 2 with damage limitation in mind. Starting from P28 he set out on what only can be called a hero drive. In just 4 laps (!!) he got back to P3, passing 14 cars just on the first lap alone.
Due to a code 60 neutralisation Maikel found his way up halted for 2 laps after which he continued to move up to P2 starting the final lap. Just short of time to attack for P1 Maikel crossed the finish line with an amazing P2 as the final result.

When you work hard as a team and you get paid back by your driver like that you can only feel proud.

Race 3 there could only be one mission. Maikel took the lead on the first lap. Was passed by Marcel Dekker going into the first corner of the last lap, re-passed in turn 3 and took the win.

Season speeding up, another win!

At Zandvoort during the second raceday of the season took his second wij of this year. But it did not come easy and without some luck.

During qualifying Maikel noticed 2 issues, a lack of grip turning left and a slipping clutch between 3rd and 4th gear. Luckily he still managed a 3rd place in qualifying and the team set to work to change the clutch.

With race 1 just 2hrs later and a car on just stands out was a race against the clock but the team managed with 20min to spare, just in time to go to the pre-grid.

With a good start and some early overtakes Maikel managed to take the lead of the race and held on until the final straight. With Liroy Stuart, who had helped keep the lead during the race, jumping out of the slipstream for a dash to the line and just cliching the win ahead of Maikel.
Race 1: P2 or not....

After the race there was a scrutineering check in which a number of cars where found to have an infringement with the regulations which meant Maikel got P1.

Race 2 was another close battle with Maikel still struggling with grid in the left turns at Zandvoort even though the team tried to resolve them.
Positions varied throughout the race between P1 and P4. To the line Maikel had a slipstream to claim P3 just ahead of Yannick Rehorst.
Race 2: P3 or not....

Again after the race some cars where found to have infringements with the regulations and Maikel moved up to P2.

Race 3 the team decided to use a different set of tires on the right-hand side of the car which improved the handling. A late in the race code 60 caused the field to bunch up and some wild action developed into the last laps. What looked like a P4 at the line became a P3 after penalties for track limits for winner Marcel Dekker with many drivers receiving penalties for speeding under code 60.

Overall result for the day P1!
