The Old Man: Car Test Saab 96 L Super
Germany, 1978. "You've got a rare find there. Built in '55 or so?" The gas station attendant took the Saab 96 for a well-maintained classic car. "Built in '77," I informed him. The man looked at me as if I were pulling his leg. He'd never seen a car like that before.
No wonder: While the rounded old car has been around in Scandinavia since 1949, it wasn't until 1975 that this Scandinavian "people's car," of which 700,000 have already been built, became available in Germany. Initially, it cost 14,750 DM – an exorbitant price. From 1977 onwards, the German importer received larger quantities, could offer more favorable pricing, and, on top of that, the Swedish krona was devalued.
