Stepping out of your comfort zone is terrifying, until you actually do it!
I am still processing this absolute milestone: I just gave my very first presentation as a speaker!
🎤 30 minutes. Full English. In front of an incredible international audience at the AIPPI.ORG AIPPI World Congress.
I had the absolute honor of sharing the stage during an exclusive lunch session dedicated to the Geographical Indication (GI) of musical instruments. Discussing the protection, heritage, and future of craftsmanship alongside Steinway & Sons Steinway & Sons, Elio De Tullio, and Guillaume Henry.
In my talk, I opened up about my true passion: modern string instrument construction, the Evolution of the violin, my personal working methods and many more. Bringing the ancient, meticulous craft of violin making into the spotlight of global intellectual property law felt deeply fulfilling. 🎻✨
If there is one thing I want you to take away from this post, it’s this: Face your fears. Say yes to challenges that scare you. Growth lives exactly on the other side of comfort.

The truth is, I haven’t felt much motivation to post lately. The digital world has felt loud, while my workshop has felt beautifully quiet.Over the last few weeks, I’ve found myself deeply craving the present moment, just being completely lost in the work, hearing the sound of the scraper, and feeling the wood of the violin top and back become perfectly smooth under my hands. No cameras, no edits, just the craft.But today, I felt a gentle spark to share a piece of that stillness with you. Alongside my own handcrafted instruments, I am always delighted to offer a carefully selected range of exceptional violins and violas from other makers.

This is already the second instrument by Caroline Barthelmeß .c.barthelmess that I have had the pleasure of presenting. The first viola found its new owner almost immediately, and now I am excited to introduce this beautiful violin.

It is a remarkably precise piece of craftsmanship, featuring a playful and distinctive detail in the purfling work that gives the instrument its own unique character. Beyond its visual appeal, it offers effortless playability and a wonderfully balanced, resonant sound.

Returning to the roots means returning to the present moment.

As a child, I simply played. There was no audience, no expectations, only curiosity, sound, and joy.

Somewhere along the way, I lost that. Music gradually became tied to achievement, expectations, and the identity I built around being a musician. The more I tried to become someone through music, the further I drifted from the simple act of making it.

Now, improvising on this self-built viola feels like coming home.

In psychology, suffering often arises when we cling—to outcomes, identities, and the stories we tell about ourselves. Improvisation invites the opposite: letting go, listening deeply, and allowing each moment to unfold without needing it to be anything else.

For me, this is not about performing. It is about remembering how to simply play again.
