Alongside my own handcrafted instruments, I am always delighted to offer a carefully selected range of exceptional violins and violas from other makers.

This is already the second instrument by Caroline Barthelmeß .c.barthelmess that I have had the pleasure of presenting. The first viola found its new owner almost immediately, and now I am excited to introduce this beautiful violin.

It is a remarkably precise piece of craftsmanship, featuring a playful and distinctive detail in the purfling work that gives the instrument its own unique character. Beyond its visual appeal, it offers effortless playability and a wonderfully balanced, resonant sound.

Returning to the roots means returning to the present moment.

As a child, I simply played. There was no audience, no expectations, only curiosity, sound, and joy.

Somewhere along the way, I lost that. Music gradually became tied to achievement, expectations, and the identity I built around being a musician. The more I tried to become someone through music, the further I drifted from the simple act of making it.

Now, improvising on this self-built viola feels like coming home.

In psychology, suffering often arises when we cling—to outcomes, identities, and the stories we tell about ourselves. Improvisation invites the opposite: letting go, listening deeply, and allowing each moment to unfold without needing it to be anything else.

For me, this is not about performing. It is about remembering how to simply play again.

Diese eher kleine Bratsche hat es in sich und war nicht ohne Grund das Hauptinstruments eines Berufsbratschisten. Gebaut wurde das Instrument 1951 und wartet nun darauf wieder zum Singen gebracht zu werden.

Made in 2025 by me, this Violin was build after a Guarneri del Gesu with a dark brown/red varnish and a one piece maple back, matched with a spruce from Roger Hargraves collection.
It was a special project and made it‘s owner very happy in the past year but due to health issues he is and will be unable to play the violin in the future. I am grateful to get the violin back, since this violins soundcharacter matches my personal taste and what most of my clients are looking for: resonant, projecting, full, and more on the dark and warm side. It is a great chance for those who don‘t want to wait for 2 years to get a costumised violin by me.

Big sound. Easy feel.

42 cm of depth, warmth, and character.

Inspired by the work of Claudio Manfio, this viola combines a generous body with effortless playability thanks to its refined proportions and slim neck design. I am really thankful to Manfio who shared his ideas and insights on his Viola Model which is rich, expressive, and comfortable from the very first note.

I have introduced my own artistic interpretation through selected adjustments to the varnish color and some other aspects 🙏
