Can colour be sustainable?

Colour is often the overlooked part of material innovation. While developing bio-based materials, we realised that sustainability needs to go beyond the material itself - it also includes the way we colour and finish its surface.

This question became the starting point for a collaboration between Crafting Plastics and the PhD research of Mgr. art. Soňa Otiepková, with expert consultation from Ing. Lukáš Gál, PhD. from the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.

This resulted in an alternative approach: a bio-based coating system using a transparent plant-derived resin made from epoxidised soybean oil combined with carefully selected mineral pigments.

The goal was to create a surface treatment that respects the character of biomaterials while adding colour and protection - without relying on conventional synthetic coating systems that can limit their circular potential.

This June, we’ll be part of .
Presented at Gammel Dok in Christianshavn, the exhibition explores colour, light, texture and form through biomaterials and circular production processes - bridging experimentation and application across interiors, lighting, product design and architecture.

Looking forward to sharing conversations around biomaterials, circularity and material futures.

Looking back at Milan Design Week, where our installation What Grows Between at .milano became a space for people to meet, pause, talk and experience materials in a more immersive way.

It opened up a subtle redefinition of how objects and people can coexist within the same environment, where occupying space became something constantly negotiated through connection and care.

Thank you to everyone who came by and shared the space with us.

Custom Nuatan bioplastic table tops created for the newly opened .kaviarne.

Nuatan brings a unique, warm and tactile presence to the space, with subtle, intentional irregularities that make each surface feel alive rather than industrially uniform. Through heat-pressing, textures and patterns can be precisely tailored, allowing material expression to become part of the design language itself.

What grows betweenmilano | .design.week

A vertical system where roots, water, and bioplastics form a shared environment - growing, reacting, and signalling in real time. Subtle shifts in colour reveal changes within, turning invisible processes into something we can perceive.

Not a fixed object, but a structure in constant negotiation with life.

On view at Alcova during Milan Design Week 2026.
