The ASTM International has now established standards for waterless coolants. These standards set performance limits on heat transfer capacity, viscosity, cold weather performance, corrosion protection, etc.
Occasionally we hear of other brands that claim "waterless" status or similar performance with our coolants. Our testing indicates that their claims don't match their performance and our policy is to ignore them and let their coolant live or die of its own accord. With these new standards in effect, there will be companies that need to put more work into their R&D.
Evans Cooling Systems, Inc. was the first to create a waterless coolant back in the 1980's (under a different company name). Our current formulations are very advanced compared to our first fluid which was essentially 100% propylene glycol.
We still produce and sell that original formula - NPG Coolant. NPG is legal for use in race series where ethylene glycol is banned, but propylene glycol is legal such as American Flat Track, CCS ASRA Racing, and some track day clubs. NPG will not pass the new ASTM standards, but it works fine in race engines because they don't have complex coolant circuits like a passenger car. All our other coolants are well within the range of the ASTM D8085 standards.
