THE WALK — FOUR BEAT RHYTHM
The walk is often considered the simplest gait. In correct dressage, it’s anything but.
The walk is a four-beat gait, with each hoof touching the ground independently.
Unlike the trot and canter, there is no moment of suspension. At least two, and often three, feet remain on the ground.
And while the walk has no suspension, it absolutely needs impulsion — the energy created from behind that allows the horse to move forward freely and through the body without rushing.
A correct walk should be clear, regular, relaxed and ground-covering, with the back swinging and the neck and head able to move naturally with the rhythm.
When the rider interferes with that movement, the walk can easily become hurried, restricted or lateralized.
