Let’s Talk Honestly About Car Rental Prices (No Awkwardness, Promise)
Every now and then, someone visiting Costa Rica for a short stay—usually two or three weeks—tells me they’re surprised that my rental rates are fairly similar to those of the big car rental companies. It’s a totally fair observation, and honestly, it opens the door to a useful conversation.
A lot of people assume that because I run a nonprofit, or because I manage older vehicles, the prices should be dramatically lower. That expectation makes sense. Many nonprofit fundraisers advertise very cheap options, and “older car” often gets translated as “rock-bottom price.” But in real life, it’s a little more nuanced than that.
Even though my cars are older, they’re still comparable in size, reliability, and overall usefulness to what the larger companies offer—especially for short-term rentals. And when the vehicle category and quality are comparable, the pricing naturally ends up in a similar range. That’s why, for short trips, the difference is usually around 20%. There is a discount, but it’s not a night-and-day one.
🐾Who My Service Is (and Isn’t) Built For
My business isn’t really designed for ultra-budget travelers who are coming for a couple of weeks and hoping to pay the absolute minimum for a rental car. If you’re here short-term, you’ll likely save a couple hundred dollars with me—money you might put toward activities, tours, or maybe splurging a little on where you stay. That’s still a win, just not a massive one.
🐾Where things get really interesting is with long-term rentals.
🐚The Real Advantage: Long-Term Travel
If you’re planning to spend more than a couple of months in Costa Rica, that’s where my model truly shines. For long-term travelers, the savings aren’t about a few hundred dollars—they can be the difference between having a car or not having one at all.
Many big rental companies don’t rent beyond a month, and when they do, the monthly rates are still very high. Long-term travelers often get stuck or priced out entirely.
With me, long-term renters can access rates under $27 per day, including insurance (excluding delivery), with a three-month commitment. That’s a game changer for digital nomads, slow travelers, volunteers, and anyone building a temporary life here rather than passing through.
If you’re staying longer than a month but not quite three, you still benefit. Those renters enjoy high-season rates that are roughly 50% of what the big companies charge—which adds up fast.
💚So… Are Cheap Rentals a Myth?
Not exactly. They just make the most sense for long-term travelers.
If you’re here for three weeks or less, it’s still important to expect to pay what it realistically costs to rent a car in Costa Rica. You’ll get a modest discount for renting an older vehicle, plus something that doesn’t always show up on a price list: the knowledge that your rental is supporting a good cause The Wet Nose Project, even when the profit margin is smaller.
And if that model fits you—great. If not, that’s okay too. There’s room for every kind of traveler here.
At the end of the day, this isn’t about convincing anyone they should rent from me. It’s about making sure everyone understands who my service is best for, and why the pricing looks the way it does. No pressure, no judgment—just clarity.
