It’s been a busy summer. 🚗🔍

Lots of vehicles, lots of inspections, and many different stories.

Over the past few months, dozens of vehicles have gone through VerifyCar — from simple daily drivers to SUVs and luxury vehicles. Some were great finds, while others had hidden body repairs, corrosion, recently cleared trouble codes, mechanical issues, or problems serious enough to reconsider the purchase.

Today’s inspection came with an unexpected assistant 😸

Unfortunately, I couldn’t recommend the vehicle for purchase — it had serious structural rust on the frame and in several critical areas. What might look like a good deal can quickly turn into a very expensive problem.

But the inspection itself was more fun than usual because the neighbour’s cat stayed around to supervise the whole process. 😄🐈

Not every used vehicle is a bad option. Sometimes you come across a truly good one — and in those situations, the most important thing is to make a decision quickly, negotiate properly with the seller, get a discount, and buy the vehicle with a full understanding of its condition, including all pros and cons.

In this case, the vehicle had a minor accident more than 5 years ago. Today there are no signs of rust, paint peeling, or repair issues, which shows the repairs were done properly and to a good standard. The mileage is very low for its age. It also comes with a new battery, plus both summer and winter tires that have only been used for one season each.

Yes, the engine oil should be changed — but that is normal for almost any used vehicle after purchase. Even if the oil looks visually clean, most sellers will not spend extra money on premium oil and quality parts before selling the car.

In the end, the client got a solid vehicle for a very good price. We fully handled and monitored the entire deal process, helped with negotiations, and secured a discount from the seller. As a result, even after paying for our services, the client still came out ahead financially.

🚨 Another vehicle inspection — and another reminder why you should NEVER rely only on the seller’s words.

A 2023 truck with low mileage came in for inspection.
Vehicle value: over $52,000 CAD.

According to the seller:
✔️ Never in an accident
✔️ Original paint
✔️ No issues at all

But the reality was very different…

🔎 During the inspection we found:

❌ Five panels had been repainted outside factory conditions
❌ The hood and one fender had been replaced
❌ The repair quality was honestly terrible

To notice the problems, we didn’t even need special paint thickness equipment.

The body shop didn’t even bother removing a factory sticker before painting — they literally painted over it.

And that was not all.

⚠️ One wheel out of four was different from the others, which can also point to previous damage or questionable repair history.

And the “cherry on top”:

⚠️ Engine misfires.

This was a V8 engine with a cylinder deactivation system designed for fuel economy and emissions compliance. Repairs on systems like this can become VERY expensive — even when people talk about “warranty.”

And honestly, this is the worst part.

Because:
❌ Paint may eventually peel
❌ Rust may start appearing later
❌ But engine problems can turn into major expenses very quickly

❗️Once again:
It does not matter if the seller is a private owner or a dealership.

Do not make decisions based on emotions.
Do not trust words alone.
Inspect what you are paying for.

If the seller wants to check your financial situation before approving the sale — then you absolutely have the right to check the actual condition of the vehicle before buying it.

Here’s an honest overview:

✅ Mileage verified — matches actual condition
✅ Original factory paint — no body repairs or repainting
✅ Tires in excellent condition
✅ Battery in excellent working condition
✅ Full diagnostic scan completed — 🚫 no critical fault codes found

⚙️ Minor findings (normal wear from regular use):

• 🪟 Windshield replaced with good-quality aftermarket glass
• 🪨 Small stone chips above windshield — early surface rust starting (recommended to treat early)
• 📦 Light scratches inside trunk and inner tailgate panel
• 🔊 Dashboard volume k**b inconsistent — steering wheel controls work perfectly

• New batteries installed, but both need tires if driven now

⚠️ Important details:
• Ford (from Ontario) — more rust, which is common for that region; however, both rocker panels were replaced, which is critical for passing Safety
• Elantra — simpler and cheaper to own, with a possible rear left ABS speed sensor issue (a test drive is needed to confirm)

📌 Conclusion:
Both cars are usable, but the Elantra comes with fewer risks and lower long-term costs.
