Meet The Bargain Brothers

Doug- MacIver (33) was born in Winnipeg and raised in Toronto, ON, leaving home at 15 to pursue a career in professional hockey. Over his career, he played for minor league teams across North America, followed by a stint in Europe. After nine years of playing in the minors, Doug suffered a career-ending knee injury. With his hockey dreams sidelined, he joined the family business less than a year before Doug Sr. died, marking a major career and life transition for Doug. Helping run Ride Time has turned out to be as big a challenge as playing professional hockey was, except there’s no body-checking in the office. Twitter:

Andrew- MacIver (29) is Doug’s younger brother. Unlike Doug, he wanted to be in the car business from the age of six, hung around the dealerships with his dad, and always intended to join the family business. While growing up in Toronto he worked for a year at Willowdale Dodge before going to Georgian College in Barrie to study automotive sales and management. One year into the course, his dad’s Toronto business collapsed, and by the time he finished the third and final year of the course, there was no family business left to get into. Andrew moved to Winnipeg with the family and helped his dad Doug Sr. get the new business off the ground. Going from new car sales to used car sales was a big shift, based on an entirely different business model. But Andrew and Doug Sr. relished the freedom to operate outside the scrutiny of the auto makers. Andrew is the driving force for change and growth, but his youthful ambition sometimes overwhelms attention to detail. Andrew is living with Doug and Meagan in their condo, but Meagan wants him out. So now, he’s looking to move in next door. Twitter:

AI can be an incredible tool when you’re shopping for a vehicle.

It can explain features, compare models and help you figure out what questions to ask.

It can also be confidently, spectacularly wrong. 🤖

We’re seeing more shoppers use ChatGPT and other AI tools to choose vehicles, calculate trade values and even write negotiation strategies.

The problem isn’t that people are using AI. We use it too.

The problem is treating its answer like verified information.

AI may compare Canadian pricing with American pricing, mix up model years, confuse trim levels or use the cheapest listing it can find without considering mileage, accident history, condition, tires, rust or mechanical repairs.

It can look at two similar photos and decide the vehicles should have the same price, even though one has been properly inspected and reconditioned while the other needs thousands of dollars in work.

Then it presents the answer with complete confidence.

That’s the dangerous part.

A citation doesn’t automatically make the answer correct either. You still need to open the link and confirm that the source actually supports what AI is telling you.

We put together a guide explaining why AI struggles with used vehicles, where its information can go wrong and the five questions every shopper should ask before trusting its recommendation.

Use AI to help you ask better questions.

Just don’t ask it to be your appraiser, mechanic, lender and negotiator all at once.

Read the full guide here:

AI can help you research a vehicle, but it can also compare the wrong trims, use outdated prices and recommend vehicles based on flawed data. Here’s what every shopper should know before trusting it.
