We love seeing vehicles customized with aftermarket accessories! Lift kits, fender flares, light bars, bug deflectors, running boards, custom grilles, and tonneau covers can make your vehicle stand out from the crowd.
๐ The Pros:
โข Personalize your vehicle
โข Improve functionality and convenience
โข Add protection in some situations
โข Create a unique look that's all your own
โ ๏ธ The Cons:
โข Many aftermarket accessories are only manufactured for a short period of timeโsometimes just a couple of years.
โข If an accessory is damaged in a collision, hailstorm, or other incident, an exact replacement may no longer be available. โข Discontinued parts can lead to delays, additional costs, or the need to replace matching accessories on both sides of the vehicle.
โข Some accessories may not fit or match perfectly if a substitute part is required.
Some notes to consider with regard to accessories on an insurance claim:
1. We can wait 6 months or more for replacement accessories. MPI has strict rules with vehicle parts so if the manufacturer states that it is still available, then we have to use that part. We can't opt for a different part as we have to replace the part with exactly what was on the vehicle.
2. Insurance only replaces the damaged parts so if you have more than one on your vehicle, they won't pay for the other one(s) that aren't damaged so that they match. A great example of this is rims - if you have a damaged rim and it can't be repaired or replaced, then they will do a cash settlement on the one rim. Now you have 3 rims. You can try to find a used matching one or buy all new rims at your own cost.
3. Insurance only covers replacement of items that are legal, not off road use only and are compliant with the Highway Traffic Act. For example, if you choose lights that don't comply, then you would only be allowed to have a legal part put back on the vehicle.
Before adding aftermarket accessories, it's worth considering what could happen if they ever need to be replaced.
At Meadowview, we regularly deal with damaged aftermarket parts and know firsthand how challenging it can be to track down discontinued accessories.
