Has this ever happened to you?

You arrive arrive at your camp site and get set up you turn on your propane bottles and soon find you have no propane working? So, baffled, you return to the bottles inspect them, maybe even try the valves again, but still no propane... Now frustrated, because you know that you recently filled your tanks and checked them to be full or near full, you likely purchase a new regulator and replace it only to find that you still have no propane! Or perhaps, at some point it magically started working again? Haha. This is usually the point where I am called in to exercise the propane demons from your RV.

I am going to offer a quick lesson and a free trade secret! First off, if you have replaced any parts, they are likely perfectly good spares so save them. Now, this is something that typically happens on newer tanks and the newer they are the worse it can be. But fear not, for there is no real issue. Any newer propane tank has a built in "excess flow prevention" device in the valve that will cut-off if the flow exceeds the maximum set point, even if only for a split second. The only way the reset this is to manually close the valve.

So, when you open the tank for the first time of a trip, the system is often empty and requires a large surge of gas to pressurize. This usually exceeds the max only for an instant and causes a lock-up of the tank preventing gas from flowing. The trick for this little RV riddle is to " crack the valve open slowly and listen closely", If you hear a click, the tank has locked up, close and retry. Watch the video to know what to listen for.

Hello campers!
The season is upon us and in less than three weeks it will be time to summerize. Those of us with a Suburban water heater will want to check the "Anode Rod" condition before re-installing with a 1-1/16" shallow socket. Also as a free tip for installing, stuff a chunk of paper towel into the socket. This will help force the rod to thread properly into the tank instead of sinking to the back of the socket.

My "Rule of thumb" for anode rods are:

If more than 50% of the core is exposed, it's time to replace!

Only Suburban water heaters require anode rods. NOT Atwoods. ( see pics)
