This snapshot goes back to the 1979 golden era of the Grand Prix, long before it became the city tradition it is today. Ever since then, Gastown shuts down these same streets once a year for the race, while the city comes together to watch some of the best cyclists chew up the cobbles and hang on for dear life.⁠

One of North America’s most historic and prestigious road cycling events is back! 🚴⁠

The Gastown Grand Prix has been part of Vancouver since 1973, can you believe it? This Wednesday, July 8th, elite cyclists return to the downtown core for another day of racing through Gastown's iconic cobblestone streets.⁠
⁠
If you're heading downtown, here’s what to know:⁠
⁠
🚧 Road closures will be in effect throughout the day, with most closures taking place between 12:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. around Water St, Cordova St, Cambie St, Columbia St, Powell St, Abbott St, and the surrounding area.⁠
⁠
🚫 There will also be parking restrictions on Carrall St, from Cordova to Water St, from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.⁠
⁠
Our tip? Park outside the event zone and enjoy the walk. It'll save you time and help you avoid getting caught behind the closures. Enjoy the races, and drive safe!

With the FIFA Fan Festival happening at the PNE grounds this season, we couldn’t help but think back to Vancouver’s demolition derby era 🚗💥⁠

Back in the 60s and 70s, abandoned and impounded cars from around the city were brought to the PNE and smashed to pieces in front of cheering crowds. Safe to say, this crazy show quickly became a local favourite.⁠
