Hyundai Motor CEO José Muñoz believes the global slowdown in electric vehicle demand has passed. Speaking at the company's 2026 CEO Investor Day in Seoul on August 26, he said the market is recovering, although the pace of adoption varies from country to country.

“There is no longer an EV chasm in the global market; only the pace differs by country,” Muñoz said.

Hyundai is backing that outlook with an ambitious European expansion plan. The company aims to increase its annual EV sales in Europe from 116,000 vehicles in 2025 to more than 420,000 by 2030.🚘⚡

A new MIT study finds that electric vehicles generally produce fewer lifetime greenhouse-gas emissions than similar gasoline-powered cars in most parts of the U.S.

The study looks at the vehicle’s full lifecycle, including making the car and battery, producing electricity, driving, traffic, climate and local conditions.

In most locations, EVs produce 40% to 60% fewer lifecycle emissions than similar gasoline cars. The size of the reduction can vary widely depending on where and how the vehicle is used.

The biggest factor is the local electricity mix. EVs generally provide greater emissions savings in areas where electricity comes from cleaner sources.

Driving habits also matter. Researchers found that individual driving patterns can affect emissions savings as much as regional factors. How far, how often and where someone drives can change the size of the benefit.

The largest emissions reductions were found in areas with cleaner electricity, heavier traffic, higher annual driving distances and milder climates.

Cold weather does reduce EV efficiency, but researchers found that its effect on annual emissions savings was smaller than some claims suggest.

In a very cold place such as North Dakota, an EV’s fuel economy could fall by as much as 50% on a particularly cold night, but the researchers found the effect on its overall annual emissions benefit was minimal.

Making the vehicle and battery also creates emissions before an EV reaches the road. Those emissions are included in the study’s lifecycle comparison. The researchers also found that EVs can become cleaner over time as electricity grids become cleaner, even without changing the vehicle itself.

The study does not say EVs have zero environmental impact. It found that in most U.S. locations studied, similar EVs produce fewer lifetime emissions than similar gasoline cars.

“But EV batteries only last a few years…” 🤔

The world’s largest independent EV battery study, conducted by Aviloo, analysed 500,000+ battery health tests across 20 popular EV models.

At 50,000km, NONE of the 20 models had a median battery health below 90%.

And even as mileage increased, most were still retaining around 90%+ of their original battery capacity.

At the highest mileage band tested…

Hyundai Ioniq 5 - 97.13%
Mercedes EQA - 96.56%
Hyundai Kona - 96.27%
Audi Q8 - 95.71%
BMW i4 - 95.60%

Tesla Model Y retained a median over 94%.

That’s data from more than HALF A MILLION battery tests across Europe, Asia, Australia and North & South America.

EV batteries aren’t lasting 3–5 years.

They’re retaining the vast majority of their original capacity after significant mileage.

The firm also stated that drivers will see an “initial drop” in SoH over the first few thousand miles, before the curve flattens off.

All data points to electric vehicles having the same lifespan as the average ICE vehicle.

However, the batteries are still extremely powerful and useful, with an ability to also be used in battery storage for many years, before eventually being recycled.

Don’t let people who don’t own an EV decide your opinion of EVs.

One of the strangest things about electric cars is that many of the strongest opinions come from people who have never owned one.

You’ll hear things like “you’ll always be waiting hours to charge”, or “the batteries will need replacing”.

The truth is, most of them are uneducated, bitter men that don’t actually know anything about EV.

They are spreading things they have seen on memes and making it sound like a fact.

Speak to actual EV owners.

Most will be honest about the pros and cons. They live them.

Then you’re better positioned to make an informed choice.

The vast majority charge at home while they sleep, wake up every morning with a “full tank”, spend far less on running costs, enjoy the instant performance, and wouldn’t willingly go back to a petrol or diesel car.

That doesn’t mean EVs are perfect.

They aren’t the perfect solution for every person or every situation.

But ICE vehicles are far from perfect.

But if you’re genuinely curious, don’t base your opinion on social media comments from people who’ve never lived with one.

Talk to people who actually drive them every day. Ask them what they like, what they don’t like, and what they would change.

Better still, borrow one for a weekend or book a proper test drive and experience it for yourself.

Make your mind up based on your own experience, not someone else’s jealousy, bitterness or unwillingness to change.

The best way to understand an EV isn’t by reading the comments section. It’s by getting behind the wheel.

What if the wheels of a vehicle could power themselves?

That's the idea behind the in-wheel motor, a technology that places the electric motor directly inside the wheel.

Instead of sending power through traditional components like transmissions, drive shafts, and differentials, the motor drives the wheel directly.

This design removes many mechanical parts, making the system simpler, lighter, and more efficient.

Because the power travels a much shorter path, less energy is lost during transmission.

It also creates more space inside the vehicle, giving engineers greater freedom to design larger cabins, better batteries, or new vehicle layouts.

Another major advantage is independent wheel control.

Each wheel can have its own motor, allowing precise control of power delivery.

With this setup, vehicles can easily achieve front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or even advanced all-wheel-drive systems without complicated mechanical connections.

From electric cars to future autonomous vehicles, in-wheel motors could reshape the way vehicles move by making them more efficient, flexible, and intelligent.
