Truro Police Service posted this back in 2018 but some people still don't understand.
Police continue to receive questions regarding School Speed Zones in Nova Scotia. For the information of the general public we wish to provide some information.
Law regarding school areas
To help make school zones safer, the speed limit is 30 km/h in areas where the approaching limit is 50 km/h, when children are present. Where the speed limit is higher than 50 km/h, drivers continue to be required to reduce speed to a maximum of 50 km/h when children are present.
Definition for "when children are present"
School zone speed limits have always been in effect "when children are present." Children present is defined as being (i) on the highway in the school area , or (ii) on land within 30 m of the centre line of the travelled portion of the highway in the school area. This reduced speed limit will be in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year when children are present in the school area.
For example: Truro Junior High School Located at 445 Young Street is located in an area where the speed limit is 50 km/h. There is a designated area marked by signage to indicate the school zone and that the speed is reduced to 30 km/h when children are present. Drivers travelling on Young Street in this area around 8AM – 9AM Monday to Friday will most likely observe numerous students walking on the side walks heading to school. This would be when a driver is obligated to slow from up to 50 km/h to a maximum of 30 km/h. However if a driver is travelling in this area at any time of day or night and there are no students or children walking near the roadway (within 30 meters) then the speed limit continues to be a maximum of 50 km/h.
