In 1969, Bruce Burgess opened the doors to The Rigging Shoppe Limited in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. A well-stocked 1000 square foot marine retail store located at 1197 Ellesmere Road, just east of Midland Avenue. Bruce also owned and operated Seaway Spars in Scarborough from 1975. Here he assembled masts, booms, standing and running rigging for Canadian boat builders including Northern, Goman,

Halman and P.D.Q. At its peak production, Seaway Spars was building over 500 masts per year. In 1989, with many summers of part-time work to her credit, their daughter, Carolyn Burgess, began working full-time at the shop. In 1993 the business was relocated to where it operates today, 44 Midwest Road. Carolyn has owned and operated The Rigging Shoppe since then building it to the amazing retail store it is today, offering a unique service to boaters everywhere. Clever staff with a talent to help their customers figure it out. In 2024, Diane and Paul Reid purchased The Rigging Shoppe and continue the tradition, under Carolyn's tutelage and with the amazing support of all the staff. Well, two significant happened this weekend. Saturday was our last sail on Ellementary and Sunday was the first of our Rigging Shoppe fall seminars. Ironically, the fall seminar was on how to winterize your boat. Some people say the first sign of fall is a leaf on the ground....I say its the winterizing seminar. Looking forward to sailing next year and in the meantime, bring on the fun stuff with Halloween and Christmas!

🧨 During our first two BC events we collected 5000 flares! If you have outdated flares that you no longer need visit us at The Rigging Shoppe in Scarborough Ontario April 10-13.
While distress flares are essential safety equipment for Canadian vessels, disposing of them remains a challenge for many boaters, particularly following the recent discontinuation of government funded disposal programs.
That’s why CanBoat / NautiSavoir, with support from the Canadian Power Squadrons Foundation and CIL, is taking action to bridge the gap between the necessity of flares and the lack of safe disposal options for boaters by funding up to 25 FREE flare disposal events this year. The average cost to offer this service for boaters is $5 per flare.
