I've been blessed with the opportunities I've been given. While I feel that there has been some luck along the way, there has often been merit. Grit. Determination. Refusing to stop moving forward.
This past weekend I had to work for it. I was invited to fly to the other side of the world to the UAE to be a part of a Drone Race. Weather, travel, disasters and road blocks weren't going to stop me from the chance of a lifetime opportunity to present Drone Racing to the Middle East (my first time there).
As like most drone races, I had some time to spend with my best-best friend Chris Thomas and we reflected on many of the renown and sometimes infamous stories of our travels since the dawn of Drone Racing. We talked together about some of the biggest and some of the most memorable ones we've seen or done. And together we both agreed, this past one will be hard to beat for it's calibre of energy, excitement, overall production and outstanding racing.
This past weekend we were in Sharjah, UAE for the MultiGP Champions Race. An incredible roster of pilots from seven countries; Champions from events spanning four contintents and many currently, recently or at one time undisputedly the world's best.
The crowds in the amphitheatre gave them the superstar treatment. Personally, I was a level-10 every Race (show), every heat (match), and Match Final; I was stoked for any one of them to take the lead or ultimately win; and many 4-lap races finished within 2-tenths of a second. Our MultiGP Champions, ESPECIALLY the ones back from retirement (Nytfury Shaun Taylor, BanniUK Luke Bannister) stole the hearts of the fans and rocked the lower halls and upstairs booth with the screams and yells from the other pilots and crew. It was incredible to see these pilots and our top-ranked competitors of today race head-to-head and be THAT competitive.
The drone they were flying was a "mondo special" ... Custom designed rig from 533, limited to 1300rpm, at a max weight of 1100g with 7" propellers. Big. Bright. Fast. The tech ops kept the fleet ready to fly (over 65 of them ready to launch at a moment's notice). This levelled the playing field from build/design advantages and allowed pilot skill to shine. It was insane to follow the big led lined drones mere feet from each other around the big, sweepy and easy to follow track.
And while there were legendary champions on the track, there were also legends backstage, upstairs and in the exhibit areas. MultiGP assembled an incredible team to build/maintain the fleet, manage the track, guide the pilots, officiate and produce the show. A very impassioned team, each with their own ideas on what they could contribute to make the show great. For some, like me, it was the opportunity we have been waiting for to deliver that "one thing" they believe has been missing. For others it was just waiting for that chance where they could shine in their area of expertise.
I watched so many people on crew make split-second decisions to correct something or avoid a potential conflict. It was amazing to see the sacrifice afforded to achieve our final goal/directive: to put on a show for an in-house audience. It was an honor and a pleasure to play a small role on "the team" in Sharjah.
With the crazy week, I didn't have time to shop for souvenirs; but what I am taking home is a special momento: the Race 5 Heat Sheet printed on an ID Badge, signed by the guy who sat to my left all week, operated the scoring PC's and devices like a beast, and made some of the greatest on-the-fly moves on a scoring computer I have ever seen.... The guy that taught me some things about livetime I didn't know were possible; and, I'd have missed my ride to the airport if he hadn't have run up the stairs with my timers and then helped me pack up to get on the road in the 36 minutes allotted between curtain and airport shuttle. Thank you Matt King!
I have many favorite moments from the many different events and event disciplines I've been a part of, this past weekend has a ton; and I will always remember this one from the smiling faces of all of the pilots, the crew and our new UAE fans. Legends. Champions. What a race.
