Please look around and be aware always

Hey drivers! Spring is here and motorcycles are coming out of hibernation.

Niagara needs a road culture that puts safety first for everyone: pedestrians, drivers, cyclists and motorcyclists.

We continue to see a high number of injury and fatal motorcycle incidents on Niagara’s Regional roads. Last year alone, 51 motorcycle collisions were reported. Nearly half resulted in serious injury and seven were fatal.

Behind every statistic is a real person. A family member, co-worker, friend or neighbour. A life can change in an instant.

Help make Niagara’s roads safer for everyone:

• Be aware: Look and then look again before turning. Motorcycles can be easy to miss at first glance.

• Give space: Judge speed and distance carefully. Motorcycles often appear farther away than they are.

• Use caution at intersections: Never rush a turn. Trying to beat a motorcycle is a risk not worth taking.

• Drive with mutual respect: Share the road. Follow speed limits. Aggressive driving puts everyone at risk.

One careless move. One split-second decision. That’s all it takes to change a life. Let’s build a safety culture together.

Something to think about!

You glance down at a text for a second while driving 50km/hr. You have already travelled more than the length of a school bus without your eyes on the road. In that time, a light can turn red, a pedestrian can step into a crosswalk or a child may have run into the street.

You won’t see any of it-it’s too late.

In Niagara, 1 in 5 serious crashes involve drivers under 25. Distracted driving is a major factor - and it can be prevented.

Parents: Have the conversation with your young driver about keeping their eyes on the road when driving.

The bottom line: Your phone can wait. Your life can’t.

The more hours your child gets to drive with you by their side the more confidant they will become. The MTO recommends a min of 80 hours before driving alone

To parents / guardians of young drivers:

You have something your teen doesn’t: experience. Thousands of hours of reading traffic, anticipating hazards, adjusting to conditions.

In Niagara, 1 in 5 serious crashes involve drivers under 25 - not because they’re careless, but because experience can’t be rushed.

Share yours:

• That time you almost didn’t see black ice until it was too late
• How you learned to spot distracted drivers around you
• Why you never drive angry or upset
• The near-miss that changed how you drive

Your stories are their lessons.

What driving wisdom have you shared with your young driver?

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year. Please be safe tonight and always! Call a cab, ask a friend, be safe and please ...
