Engine & transmission assembly removed on this 2012 Toyota Camry to replace a failed torque converter that was causing a noticeable shudder while driving. Back on the road smooth again.

This is the factory grid heater assembly inside a 6.7L Cummins.

From the factory, a single high-amp stud and retaining nut supplies power to the grid heater for cold starts. Every time the truck cycles in cold weather, that connection:

• Heats up under high amperage
• Cools down after startup
• Expands and contracts
• Vibrates constantly

Over time, thermal cycling + vibration + electrical resistance cause the nut to loosen.

Once it loosens:
Resistance increases.
Heat increases.
The stud weakens.

And eventually — it can break.

When that nut or stud falls into the intake, it gets pulled straight into a cylinder.

From there:
Bent valves.
Cracked pistons.
Cylinder damage.
Sometimes a full engine rebuild.

All from one small piece of hardware.

Prevention is simple.

We install the Banks Grid Heater Upgrade, which eliminates the failure-prone factory stud design and removes the risk of hardware entering the engine — while improving airflow.

If you own a 6.7 Cummins — especially in Alberta cold — this isn’t a “maybe someday” issue.

It’s a known weak point.
