Air filters are one of the maintenance items everyone ignores.

How often you should change them depends on the truck and where you're running it.

If you're spending a lot of time on gravel roads, you may need to change the filter much more often, even monthly.

That filter is what's keeping dirt and debris out of your engine. An air filter is cheap. An engine isn't.

Shorten the maintenance interval and change it.

You don't need to spend $150 on a torch. 😂

If you're an apprentice, there are some tools you just don't need to spend Snap-on money on.

This $150 torch and the $7.99 Princess Auto torch do the same job. Mostly shrink tube.

Buy the $7.99 one, take care of it, and save the extra $142.

You don't have to spend a fortune on every tool in your box.

If you're training an apprentice, how you do it matters.

When an apprentice starts with me, I put them in uncomfortable situations.

I give them jobs they don't know how to do and make them figure it out. Not because I expect them to know everything, but because they need to learn how to learn.

The best mechanics aren't good because they've seen every job. They have enough experience to take what they've learned before and apply it to something new.

That's what we need to teach the next generation of technicians.

This is what happens when you don't change your air filter.

This truck came in with tons of blow-by. We pulled the air filter out and found it hadn't been changed in almost 5 years.

The customer had been blowing the filters out because they were expensive.

The engine ended up dusting out and now needs an engine. Over a $100 filter turned into a whole lot more.

Air filters are a maintenance item. Change them regularly.

Why is overnight service more expensive?

It's not because we're making a bunch of money on emergency calls.

There are three reasons:

We're pulling a tech out of bed after they've already worked a full day.
Overtime and double time kick in after certain hours.
The tech who was supposed to be booked the next morning may get delayed or completely skipped.

We're giving up a scheduled customer the next morning to help you overnight, so that cost has to be accounted for.

Overnight service is expensive. If you can avoid it, do.

Safety inspections aren't the place to cut corners.

If you care about your truck, who does the safety inspection matters.

Going into a shop with the intention of arguing your way out of repairs just to save money is the wrong approach. Safety inspections are there for a reason.

If you're a shop owner, do the inspection properly. Enforce the standards that are there to keep trucks safe on the road.

Saving a few bucks isn't worth putting someone else's life at risk.

Want to waste money? Never service your transmission.

This truck is almost 10 years old and, since new, has never had a transmission fluid or filter change.

Now it's full of metal, not shifting properly, and the transmission is done.

A simple fluid and filter change every year can help prevent a failure like this.

Maintenance is a lot cheaper than replacing a transmission.
