Send it!

Our good friend and 2025 Targa competitor Enrico Bouchard is not shy about sending it. In the first photo from last weekend he launches his BMW into space at the Rallye Baie de Chaleur. The other shots by Ralph Saulnier are from last September at Targa Newfoundland. Rico and co-driver Pat Lévesque competed on the Rock last fall and were great additions to the Targa family.

Ernie Jakubowski: Targa champion.

Ernie Jakubowski of Oakville, Ontario was a two-time champion in the Targa Modern division in the rally's early years. He won the title with co-driver Bill Comat in 2003 and 2005 in a 1981 Porsche 911 SC. He later sold that car to Scott Giannou who won the Classic division three times in it. That's the car flying across the one-lane bridge in Brigus with Scott behind the wheel. Ernie later competed in a Porsche Cayman in 2007.

Ernie wrote about that Porsche 911, Bill and their experiences together: "One of the surprises on one of the stages was there were no instructions from what I can remember. I think it just said ”just drive.” And I would call this an 'adventure race.' Bill Comat, my co-driver, was absolutely awesome. They’re pretty good reasons why we finished first in modern large bore category. Another time we were having such a great time, but were way over the average maximum so we slowed down and I think we crossed the finish line like at 10 km an hour to get the average speed down below."

And there was something about knocking over someone's fence and running into a porch ...

Ernie was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2023 in recognition of all his accomplishments in motorsport as a competitor and builder. He was a winner on road and off, on two wheels and four. Here's his bio:

Ernie Jakubowski started his motorsports career in off-road racing, where he was the Canadian Off-Road overall or class champion between 1973 and 1984. He participated in other forms of racing early on, including the CASC Studded Ice Race, where he was the champion in 1976. He was also named to the Wheelspin News All-Canadian Racing Team, alongside notable names such as fellow CMHF inductees Junior Hanley, Gilles Villeneuve and Pete Bicknell.

Jakubowski was the Molson Supercross champion in 1984; he finished third in Montreal and first at the Hoosier Dome, in Supercross competition, all while driving off-road Dune Buggies. He won 28 of 32 features in a three-year period, winning his last race in a customer Mantis Spyder at the 1986 Oktoberfest in Kitchener, ON.

Jakubowski ran 121 races in Porsche Club Racing from 2004 to 2019, winning in nearly half of those events. He was a Modern Class winner in the 2003 and 2005 Targa Newfoundland events and won GTS Rookie of the Year in the Pirelli World Challenge, where he raced from 2010 to 2013. More recently, he competed in the CTCC series and CASC/VARAC vintage races.

Away from the driver’s seat, Jakubowski was a driving instructor for Porsche and BMW, teaching Ryan Blaney and Ross Chastain at CTMP ahead of the NASCAR Truck Series race in 2013. He founded Mantis Racing in 1976, designing several off-road cars, including the Mantis Spyder, while building customer cars, engines and transmissions until 2021. He also developed a four-year wind tunnel program for motorsport testing at UOIT.

Vintage racing a Targa Porsche.

Three-time Targa Newfoundland winner and accomplished road racer Scott Giannou ran his black 1981 Porsche 911 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (Mosport) in Ontario on Father’s Day weekend. Targa photographer Larry Strung caught him in action at VARAC in the top photo. That car was a Targa winner with original owner Ernie Jakubowski and again after Scott bought it.

Giannou won the gruelling Targa Newfoundland rally three times with co-driver Ray Felice after multiple attempts. He shared his advice about surviving and thriving at Targa.

Pedal to the Medal Pilsner - A Taste of Targa!

Our friends Brewing Co. and Longhouse in the gorgeous outport of Salvage at the tip of the Eastport Peninsula have produced a tasty brew in honour of Targa Newfoundland.

The Targa "Pedal to the Metal" pilsner is produced onsite in the Salvaje Brewing Company and it's "the perfect beer to celebrate after the race". It also pairs well with any of the delicious menu items at the Longhouse restaurant such as their scrumptious fish and chips, moose lasagna and lobster ravioli.

Targa pilsner is only available on tap at the Longhouse at the moment with plans to sell it in cans as well.

Overlooking the scenic harbour of this historic outport, Salvaje Longhouse is located in a former fish plant that sat empty for a decade. The Longhouse opened last fall with Targa competitors as its first guests as we celebrated our 1000th stage since 2002. The Longhouse features a restaurant, café and microbrewery with accommodations now under construction.

Salvage is one of Canada’s greatest hidden gems. Salvage is a scenic coastal community nestled among two harbours - Salvage Harbour and Bishop's Harbour - in a sheltered bay. These beautiful harbours offer the secluded tranquility so desired by travelers looking to escape from the busyness of everyday life. Salvage is also renowned for its fishing industry and hiking trails, being just steps away from the Damnable Trail Network and Terra Nova National Park.

It's definitely worth the drive along the beautiful Road to the Beaches even when you are not travelling at Targa rally speeds!

Targa classic car spotted.

Motorists stuck in a traffic jam on the Trans Canada Highway west of St. John’s, NL on Father’s Day caught a view of a piece of Targa history. A classic sports car that once belonged to late competitor Dr. Geoff Fowlow of Arnold’s Cove was spotted on a flatbed on its way to a new home.

Fowlow competed in that 1957 Jaguar XK140 with his wife Fay Matthews in Targa 2003 and it still bears the decals from that rally. During the rally, his car suffered a water pump failure. Despite the setback and resulting time penalties from missing several stages, he and his team made the necessary repairs and returned to the road later that day to continue the rally.

Dr. Fowlow passed away Sept. 23, 2025 at the age of 79.

From his obituary: “His passion for antique cars was evident in his collection of vehicles, and he was always eager to share his knowledge of cars with anyone that showed an interest. Both he and his wife even participated in the international Targa race which was a highlight for them both.”

A dedicated physician, he started practice at Come By Chance Hospital on July 1st, 1972. When the hospital closed in the early 1980s, he opened his own private practice in Arnold’s Cove. He kept this practice open until the day he passed, after 53 years of providing care to his patients.

Targa owner Robert Giannou: “I instructed Dr. Geoff at the Argentia racing school back in the late Sixties. Later in 2003, Geoff ran in Targa with Fay his wife who navigated for him. Fay also organized and ran the Clarenville stage for a couple of years after that. Both great folks. May and I spent a delightful morning with them a couple of years ago. Geoff of course insisted on the full tour of his ‘treasures’. Fascinating collection. He will be missed.”

In Memoriam - Carolyn Ryall, Targa winner

The Targa family was deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Carolyn Ryall, who competed in the first Targa Newfoundland in 2002 with her husband, Alan, and came to Targa several more times. They won the Grand Touring title in the inaugural rally in a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX.

Carolyn and Alan were together for 53 years. Carolyn, who was described as an “amazing teacher”, worked for the Peel District School Board in Ontario for 24 years. Alan calls her “the love of my life”. She passed away on June 13.

There is a beautifully written tribute to her posted at the link below including details of a Celebration of Life scheduled in September. Here is an excerpt:

“She also brought her sharp mind and sense of adventure to the car rallying community; as the trusted navigator to her husband, Alan, she competed in regional navigational car rallies as well as the first 5-day, 2200 km Targa Newfoundland Rally in 2002, winning her class with zero penalty points, setting the standard for future competitors. After retiring as a competitor, Carolyn continued to volunteer, giving her knowledge and decades of experience as a worker and organizer.”

There will be a memory wall to share your memories of Carolyn. Please share your brief favourite Carolyn anecdote by email to [email protected] so he can include it with the others.

Targa owner Robert Giannou has fond memories of the Ryalls:

“Alan and Carolyn were tremendous competitors, heartfelt helpers and wonderful sportsmen. Alan competed hard! Perhaps a tad too hard in 2003 when he flipped their Subie WRX (with co-driver Glenn Hamilton) in the last few feet of Greenspond Island’s stage as he crossed the flying finish which crested into an R5 at full chat.

It was a spectacular event but the Subie was done. They were not physically hurt, yes they were stiff and sore, but still seriously in the game. I drove them both back to the overnight in Gander and their attitude was just awesome.

Some time later when I attended the wake of their son who had passed I saw that same attitude of thankfulness for what they had done and experienced together. The same let’s get on with it attitude, especially from Carolyn. She remains in my mind a class act. We were lucky to have her as Alan will tell you.”

We send our sincere condolences to Alan and family.
