Arrive alive this holiday season by planning ahead if you’re going out to celebrate: choose a designated driver, take public transit or call a taxi or ride-sharing service.

Impaired driving is the leading criminal cause of death in Canada, making it a top priority for the Sheriff Highway Patrol and its law enforcement partners year-round.

Throughout December, the Alberta Sheriffs are working with police services throughout the province to target motorists who choose to drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. This will include an even greater presence on provincial highways, including checkstops and other methods of enforcement.

Changes to federal legislation made in 2018 give law enforcement officers the authority to demand a breath sample from every motorist who has been lawfully pulled over. This means that every driver stopped by a police officer or sheriff is compelled by the Criminal Code to provide a breath sample when an officer asks them to — regardless of the reason for the traffic stop, the time of day or the type of vehicle.

If you are stopped by the Sheriff Highway Patrol, expect to be asked to provide a breath sample in accordance with federal law. If you’re impaired, expect to be caught.
