Beer Stores Closing in Sioux Lookout – Local Businesses Are Ready to Help with Bottle Returns!

📢 Across Ontario, more than 100 Beer Stores have already closed or announced closures, including right here in Sioux Lookout. By the end of 2025, many smaller towns will see their Beer Store doors close.

💡 Good news for our community: Local businesses are stepping up to make sure residents can still return their empties!

👉 Starting January 1, 2026, grocery stores that sell alcohol will be required to accept empty cans and bottles and refund deposits. While this is a big change for small and remote communities, Sioux Lookout’s local businesses are already preparing.

Here’s what’s happening locally:
- 5 Mile Corner Fuel’s and Convenience will start accepting empties on Monday, September 15th.
- Fresh Market Foods has construction underway to enable bottle returns as soon as possible.

⚠️ While the Municipality was not involved in the provincial decision and has no input on Beer Store closures or recycling changes, we’re proud to see local businesses leading the way and making this transition smoother for everyone. The Municipality has inquired about the plans for the building and still awaits a response.
