New Listing Alert - 1970 Rhodes 65 - $USD225,000
Designed by Philip Rhodes, whose boat Weatherly won the America’s Cup against Gretel in 1962 among numerous international awards, Temeraire was part of a small series of large motorsailer ketches built around the same lines that produced the well-known La Belle Sole series, Temeraire shares her underwater shape with Rhodes' celebrated racer-cruiser Thunderhead. She is a hull built for good performance under sail and not just comfort at anchor.
This heritage is evident on the water: Temeraire points close to the wind and moves well off it thanks to a flat run aft that most heavy centerboard ketches of her era do not share. Her centerboard draft opens up gunkholing and shoal anchorages that a deep-fin cruiser of this size could never consider while still giving her the stability and load-carrying volume of a full-keel steel yacht. Her ketch rig adds to that same easy, offshore-minded flexibility: sail area is divided across three more manageable sails rather than one or two large ones, so reducing canvas as weather builds is quick work, and she balances comfortably, or heaves-to, under the mizzen alone. Temeraire’s main mast and mizzen were set up for modern reefing, including a new mizzen boom by professional riggers. This included new furlers for both the genoa and staysail and an electric winch at the bottom of the main mast for the halyard/furling.
At the same time new stainless steel fairlead blocks for the genoa and staysail, running backstays were lead back to the Barient coffee grinder 2 speed winch & a pair of winches on the aft deck for the staysail & running back stays.
There is an electric winch on the aft deck for handling the two furlers and the davits for the dinghy.
The current owner has carried out one of the most extensive, best-documented restorations of any yacht in her class: structural steel deck and hull renewal, a repaint with Alexseal, a fully rebuilt rudder, rudder post, and stern tube, an overhauled main engine and transmission, and a comprehensive 2025/26 electrical rewire, all carried out to a consistent standard and recorded in detail year by year.
Below decks, her raised salon and wide windows, reached entirely by stairs rather than ladders, are unusual in a boat of this size and era, and a world away from the dark, low-ceilinged interiors common to yachts of her vintage. The galley is located low and at the turning point of the boat to reduce motion while sailing. Four distinct sleeping cabins, a forward VIP cabin/library, a V-berth, an aft guest cabin, and a private aft master suite with its own ensuite, give her real live-aboard and small-charter flexibility alongside a genuinely comfortable owner's layout.
Currently lying at a desirable marina in Brentwood Bay, BC with assumable moorage.
An amazingly robust and comfortable vessel for adventures whether cruising the Pacific Northwest or heading further afield, Temeraire is a rare opportunity to acquire a rugged, unusually well-documented offshore ketch with real sailing pedigree behind her comfort.
